Emily Furnish taught generations in Boone
A week out of Western Kentucky Teachers College in 1939, Emily Winchester Furnish joined the faculty at the old Hebron High School at the tender age of 19, putting her in the predicament of trying to teach some students who were her contemporaries.
She was up to the challenge, though, launching a near 40-year career in the classroom that saw her teach three generations of Boone County teens at three schools before she retired in 1977.
"Her whole family were teachers, " said a daughter, Bev Furnish, of Park Hills. "Both her parents, both her sisters, her brother. I'm the only in my family who is not a teacher."
The 83-year-old Hebron resident, who died Thursday at Madonna Manor in Villa Hills, proved as versatile as enduring in the classroom, teaching a total of six subjects. She worked 15 years at Hebron, 16 years at Boone County High and seven years at Conner High. She was on the faculties that opened Boone County and Conner.
She was active outside the classroom with her students, too, serving as yearbook adviser and junior class sponsor at Boone County, and regularly attending football and basketball games at the schools where she taught.
"She just enjoyed working with the kids, " said Bev Furnish. "That's why she was so active with the clubs and going to the games.
"And they enjoyed her. I've had so many people who've told me: 'She was the best teacher I ever had.'"
Mrs. Furnish and her husband, Nick, who died in 1998, were regulars for years at the Kentucky state high school boys basketball tournament.
She got her first whiff of Kentucky hoops hysteria at the age of 3, when she was mascot for the girls team at West Louisville High in Daviess County. Her father coached that team to a state championship in 1923.
She remained devoted to the game late in life, attending many of her granddaughter's games at Villa Madonna Academy.
In retirement, she was active in the Boone County and Kentucky retired teachers organizations and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was a deacon, elder and treasurer at Bullittsville Christian Church.
She liked to garden and quilt, and she had an extensive collection of antique family quilts registered with the Kentucky Historical Society.
Surviving in addition to her daughter are another daughter, Barb Sanders of Austin, Texas; sisters Ann Hardin of Atlanta, Ga., and Jane Carr of Blacksburg, Va.; brothers Roy Winchester of Bethlehem and Warren Winchester of Louisville; and two granddaughters.
