Joyce Holmes, 71, Post-Corbett winner
When Stephen Holmes suggested a few years ago to his mother that perhaps it was time for her to think about slowing down from her frenetic schedule of community activities, Joyce Holmes dismissed the idea as unthinkable.
"Not doing those things would be living a life not worth living, " said Mrs. Holmes, a Carroll County native who died Sunday at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. She was 71.
Spurred by the conviction that it was her duty to make the community in which she lived a better place, she volunteered for dozens of organizations in Cincinnati, from health groups like the Visiting Nurses Association to historic preservation efforts like the Betts House to arts boosters. The last was "her true love, " said her son, as evidenced by the long list of such groups which depended on her efforts.
Among them: the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Association and the orchestra's Women's Committee; the Cincinnati Ballet; the Classical Music Hall of Fame; the Cincinnati Opera Guild; the American Federation of Music Clubs; the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Society for the Preservation of Music Hall.
She was not only a doer, she was a leader, heading up more than a half dozen of the groups and chairing many of their special events.
"She really did a lot of the behind-the-scenes things that made those events possible, " said Stephen Holmes, of Terrace Park, Ohio.
Mrs. Holmes was named woman of the year by both The Post and the Enquirer, was a Post-Corbett Award winner for her volunteering efforts and was a Kentucky Colonel.
She was born Joyce Faye Swango in Eagle Station, just outside Carrollton, attended schools in Carroll County and then went on to Transylvania University in Lexington. She remained a supporter of her alma mater throughout her life and won the Morris Medallion for alumni support.
She moved to Cincinnati with her husband, Harold L. "Bud" Holmes. The coupled lived for years in Indian Hill before moving downtown in the past few years, in part so they could live "close to the things there that Mom loved, " Stephen Holmes said.
Despite her immersion in community service, his mother never neglected her family, Stephen Holmes said.
"We always had a warm home, " he said. "She had a Southern charm that was very neat."
Surviving in addition to her husband and son are another son, John L. Holmes, of Cincinnati; sisters, Genrose Turner of Maysville and LaVerne Ryan of Carrollton; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
