Scott Class, excelled in a variety of sports
Over the last 10 years of his life, back problems that stemmed from a job accident left Scott Class in constant pain and unable to work much.
But before that, Mr. Class, who died Sunday at his Alexandria home at age 39, was a multi-sport athlete who delighted in amazing spectators watching his exploits.
He was an outstanding bowler who had a 204 per-game average, a 300 game and an 800 series at Southern Lanes in Alexandria.
He was a gymnast who taught that sport to youngsters in West Union, Ohio, Pendleton County and Maysville.
And he was a second baseman and shortstop in some of the best amateur softball leagues in Greater Cincinnati who liked to punctuate good fielding plays by doing backflips, a la Ozzie Smith, the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame shortstop.
"He liked to fool around and act goofy, " said his father, Irvin Class of Alexandria. "One time in a game he was running the bases, and he did a backflip between third and home."
That all ended about a decade ago when Mr. Class suffered a back injury and had to undergo surgery. The operation, in which a disc was removed from his back and a plate inserted, failed, and he had to rely on constant medication to cope with the pain he was saddled with.
"He had good days and bad, and, in the last year, it seemed like there were mostly bad, " Irvin Class said.
The pain occasionally lifted. "On those days when he was feeling good, he was a 14-carat nut, " said his father. "He was a joy to be around."
Mr. Cross was a former employee of Tate Builders & Supply in Erlanger.
