John Heuser, history buff and avid collector
John "Jack" Heuser always had his quiet side.
Growing up in Ludlow, he was somewhat of a recluse, preferring to get lost in a book rather than be outside running around with other children. As an adult, he still would rather read a book than go to a ballgame or movie.
"He was so smart, " said his sister, Vivian Alexander of Crestview Hills. "He was really into collecting coins and stamps, and he read constantly about the Civil War and history. He was a real history buff."
Mr. Heuser, 69, died Monday at his home at the Panorama Apartments in Covington. He was a clerk retired from the U.S. Postal Service and an Air Force veteran.
He stayed in Ludlow even after his family moved away. It took the flood of 1997 to dislodge him -- literally -- when high water inundated the trailer he called home. That prompted his move to the Panorama Apartments.
After his death, his sister said she was amazed at the museum-like compilation of pieces of the past she found stored in his apartment.
"I guess he was a bit of a pack rat, " she said. "He's got so many books, and all sorts of nostalgia. There are pictures of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean. There's all sorts of stuff, old stuff that he just loved and didn't want to throw out."
Mr. Heuser is also survived by nieces and a nephew.
