Father Ray Holtz, 71, longtime area pastor
Father Ray Holtz was a priest with a lot of common sense who enjoyed his work with college and seminary communities.
Rev. Raymond C. Holtz, 71, of Covington, died Thursday.
He was a retired Roman Catholic Priest with the Diocese of Covington.
Father Gerald Reinersman, Vicar General for the Covington Diocese, said of Holtz: "He was really committed to having the Gospel and the faith make a difference in people's lives.
"He was a very good spiritual director for many people. He brought a lot of good common sense to his ministry."
Originally from Cold Spring and a graduate of Newport Catholic High School, he was ordained at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in 1958.
He served at Holy Cross Church in Latonia, Villa Madonna Academy in Villa Hills, Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Thomas More College in Edgewood and St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger. He was also dean of formation at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mendelein, Ill., near Chicago and a member of campus ministry at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
"He was very involved in formation of young people in their faith, " Reinersman said.
He did graduate studies at the University of Detroit and the University of Notre Dame.
He was the first cross-country coach at Northern Kentucky University.
Rev. Holtz's was most recent assignment was pastor at Mother of God Church in Covington.
"He loved traveling. He went to Europe several times. He made a family tree for our family and made several trips to find those places and made a very nice book for all of us, " his sister, Ruth Rawe, of Cold Spring, said, noting how her brother loved gardening and was always there in times of need.
He suffered from A.L.S., also known as "Lou Gehrig's disease, " in the later years of his life.
"Father John Sterling told me that at one point the doctors were wanting to give him some anti-depressants and he refused them because he said 'This is the grieving process. I'm dying and I need to acknowledge that, '" Reinersman said.
In addition to his sister, survivors include a brother, Louis Holtz of Covington; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Mother of God Church, Covington. Reception of the Body will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 9:45 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in St. Stephen cemetery in Fort Thomas.

Jane Donovan, 91, of Latonia, died Wednesday at Grant Manor Care in Williamstown.
She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Latonia and volunteered at St. Elizabeth Medical Care Center North in Covington. Her husband, Edward L. Donovan Jr., and son Patrick Donovan, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Edward L. Donovan III of Erlanger; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home in Ludlow. Visitation starts at 12:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Evelyn Estelle Hornbeek, 88, of Butler, died Thursday at the River Valley Nursing Home in Butler.
She operated Hornbeek Grocery for 38 years. Her husband, Dempsey "Slick" Hornbeek, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her son, Richard Hornbeek of Butler; a daughter Janet Bergen of New Brunswick, N.J.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Peoples Funeral Home in Butler. Visitation begins at noon Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery.
Mae Evelyn Jones, 91, of Owenton, died Friday at Owenton Manor.
She was a member of Hesler Assembly of God Church where she played the piano and organ. Her husband, Demaree Jones, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her sons, Gayle F. Gaines of Dry Ridge and Arvin H. Gaines of Mobile, Ala.; a sister, Juanita Lewis of Georgetown; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services will be 7 p.m. Monday at McDonald & New Funeral Home in Owenton. Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Ruth E. Maddox, 82, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
Her husband, Harry Albert Maddox, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Ray Maddox of Ubank and Robert Maddox of Knoxville, Tenn.; daughters, Sue Bush and Toni Maddox, both of Florence, and Naomi Connley of Burlington; brothers, Robert Ginter of Louisville, Coleman and Austin Ginter, both of Winchester, and Roy Ginter of Paris; 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Martha McEndre Martin, 82, of Latonia, died Nov. 16 at Atria Summit Hill in Crestview Hills.
She was a retired teller and data processor with Central Trust Bank and a member of First Church of God, Latonia. Her husband, Henry Martin, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Frakes of Edgewood; and three grandsons.
Memorial services will be at 5 p.m. Dec. 14 at First Church of God, Latonia. Burial will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Ruth Morris McIntyre, 83, of Carrollton, died Thursday at Kindred Hospital in Louisville.
She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and operated McIntyre Market Basket with her husband. A son, Jeff McIntyre, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Haydon McIntyre of Carrollton; daughters, Sue Charles of Marshall, N.C., and Elaine Daffron of Chelsea, Ind.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Charles B. Meyer, Sr., 70, of Florence, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
His wife, Saundra Meyer, and a son, Scott Meyer, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Charles Meyer Jr. of Latonia and Guy Meyer of Walton; daughters, Diane Sandel of Elsmere, Sherill McDaniel and Joelyn Rose, both of Florence, and Thelma Meyer of Burlington; a sister, Selma Bishop of Covington; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Edward Moorman, 85, of Crestview Hills, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was a business secretary for the Painter's Union in Cincinnati for more than 30 years. He also was a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and a Kentucky Colonel. A daughter, Penny Schomaker, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia "Sis" Yelton Moorman of Crestview Hills; a son, Mike Moorman of Walton; a sister, Margaret Whitledge of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church in Latonia. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Erlanger.

William J. Osterhage Jr., 73, of Villa Hills, died at 4:17 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.
He was a retired tool and die maker with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, and a member of United Auto Workers Union No. 863. He was a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Church, Erlanger, where he was an usher, and a member of Villa Hills Civic Club.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Osterhage; sons, William J. Osterhage III of Fort Wright and John Osterhage of Villa Hills; a daughter, Barbara A. Rawe of Fairfield, Ohio; a sister, Phyllis Menetrey of Alexandria; and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

She was a former accountant for Montgomery Wards. Her husband, John Paris, preceded her in death.

Evelyn "Ruth" Wilson Smith, 83, of Williamstown, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice Unit in Covington.
She was a retired Kentucky Department of Revenue employee, a member of Mt. Olivet Christian Church in Williamstown and an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. Her stepdaughter, Beverly Yocum, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, James T. Smith of Williamstown; a son, Larry Ewing of Dry Ridge; stepsons, Nick and Danny Smith of Covington; daughters, Carol Hornbeek of Okeechobee, Fla., Donna Frederick of Union, and Gloria Ewing of Seymour, Ind.; stepdaughter, Linda McGovern of Covington; a brother, Randall Wilson of Tampa, Fla.; 23 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation begins at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
