Charles Doll Sr., was maitre d' at region's clubs, restaurants
Charles F. Doll Sr. was a maitre d' and waiter for 52 years at some of the finest restaurants and clubs in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
He worked at the Maisonette, Pigall's and the Queen City Club in Cincinnati and at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate.
"It was in his blood; he loved it, " said Mr. Doll's wife, Edith Doll.
Mr. Doll, 89, of Falmouth, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was first employed by Thompson Business in Cincinnati, then in Chicago. He worked 15 years each at Beverly Hills and Pigall's. He retired after several years at the Queen City Club.
Among celebrities he served at Beverly Hills were Ted Lewis, Sophie Tucker, Minnie Pearl and Johnny Ray. He had gone on to work at another restaurant when the Beverly Hills club was destroyed by fire in 1977.
Mr. Doll was an Army veteran of World War II. His first wife, Kathryn Mabel Doll, died in 1973.
"He had a big heart, " said Edith Doll. "He was good to everybody. He was a big, lovable guy."
Mr. Doll was a sports fan, especially interested in the Cincinnati Reds and in horse racing.
Other survivors include a son, Charles Doll Jr. of Barbourville; daughters, Harriett Meyers of Bracken County, and Betty Mae Wright of Falmouth; stepsons, Jerry Ellison of Atlanta, Gilbert Godby of Fairfield, Ohio, and Richard Godby of Copley, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Rita Ann Hodke of Covington; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Herbert Bonner, 63, of Cincinnati, died Tuesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Mount Airy campus, Cincinnati. He was a technical manager with Cinergy.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Bonner; sons, Michael Bonner of Dayton, Ohio, and Tyrone Scott Bonner of Cincinnati; daughters, Onieda Bonner of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Regina McKinney, Traci A. Straughn and Monica Bonner, all of Cincinnati; brothers, William Bonner of Newport, Arzeil Bonner and Albert Bonner, both of Cincinnati; sisters, Barbara Housley and Betty Blackburn, both of Newport, Delores Hayes and Doris Foster, both of Cincinnati; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Second Baptist Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Jones, Simpson and Gee Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Ida Redmond Broering, 93, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died at 5:06 p.m. Wednesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Western Hills campus, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a former member of St. Therese Church, Southgate, and the church Altar Society and Legion of Mary. Her husband, Robert H. Broering Sr., died in 1987. A son, Thomas J. Broering, died in 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ida Williams of Cincinnati; a son, Robert H. Broering Jr. of Cincinnati; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, followed by prayers. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Southgate. Thelma Broome, 84, of Bellevue, died Thursday at her home. She was a beautician with Bevedere Beauty Shop in Cincinnati.
Survivors include a son, Elmer "Red" C. Gambrel of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; daughters, Shelby Merritt and Judy Noe, both of Bellevue, Shirley Stith of Newport and Sue Wheeler of Panama City Beach, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
James Lee Case, 69, of Alexandria, died at 12:46 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a quality control supervisor with OPW Division of Dover Corp., Cincinnati,
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Case; sons, Edward Case of Springboro, Ohio, Gary Case of Amelia, Ohio, and Greg Case of Alexandria; daughters, Teresa Grotjan of Los Angeles and Jennifer Russell of Bellevue; a brother, Russell Case of Union; sisters, Gay Adams of Irvine, Aggie Fahlbush of Newport and Thelma Marshell of Muncie, Ind.; and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Ally Elam, 93, of Covington, died Thursday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia.

Julia Frances Gifford, 83, of Butler, died Wednesday at River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. She was a member of South Side Church of Christ, Pendleton County. Her husband, Floyd Gifford, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Carolyn Crail of Highland Heights and Nancy Kyle of Peach Grove; a sister, Wilda Wenzel of Falmouth; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Pendleton County.
Shirley Goodridge, 60, of Kenton County, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Clarence Jones, 81, of Covington, died Tuesday at his home. He was a maintenance worker with Holmes High School, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Selena Jones; sons, Michael Jones of Atlanta, Dennis Jones of Danville, Raymond Rice of Cincinnati, and Gregory Jones, Carl Burton and Ronald Burton, all of Covington; a sister, Mary Rhinehart of Covington; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones, Simpson and Gee Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Gene B. Kidd, 74, of Union, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a meter reader with Cinergy, a member of Union Baptist Church, the Latonia Red Runners and Army Trailing Basketball Team and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Kidd; sons, Douglas Kidd of Florence, Don Coleman of Fort Mitchell, Gregg Coleman of Louisville and Michael Coleman of Ocala, Fla.; brothers, Glenn "Whitey" Kidd of Latonia and Wayne Kidd of Union; sisters, Wanda Rauen of Fort Myers, Fla., and Christine Conley of Florence; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence.
