Douglas Halcomb, devoted life to helping

Douglas Loren Halcomb of Cold Spring died young.

The 33-year-old police dispatcher, volunteer fireman, emergency medical technician and Special Olympics organizer lived long enough, though, to leave an impressive legacy of community service.

"He never thought of himself. He was never happy unless he was helping other people, " said his wife, Teresa Halcomb.

"You could really see it in all the work he chose.

"He loved to support people and help them through their toughest times."

Mr. Halcomb died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood after battling colon cancer for more than a year.

He was born in Harrison County and grew up in Pendleton County.

The Halcombs married in 1995 and two years later were in the middle of moving from their home in Butler to an apartment in Highland Heights when the 1997 flood ravaged Pendleton County.

None of their possessions still in Butler -- including Mrs. Halcomb's wedding dress, her dream gown that Mr. Halcomb bought for his wife -- were ruined because the flood water rose to just the level of the baseboards in their former home.

Mr. Halcomb, though, wasn't content just to sit back and savor their lucky break. He was concerned about their former neighbors.

"We were lucky enough not to lose anything, but when we were sitting in our new apartment looking at the (flood coverage) on TV, we had to pack up our car and go back and help, " Mrs. Halcomb said.

"Help" was the primary thing Mr. Halcomb did with his life. He worked 10 years as a telecommunications officer -- or dispatcher -- at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

He was a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician with the Central Campbell Fire Department in Highland Heights.

He also was a director of the Special Olympics in Northern Kentucky, a branch of the international, year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with mental retardation.

Mr. Halcomb helped organize the annual winter Polar Bear Plunge at Newport on the Levee, the local Torch Run, and Cops and Lobsters, for which he joined Florence police officers raising money by waiting on tables at a Red Lobster Restaurant.

The Halcombs moved into a new home in Cold Spring last year. Mr. Halcomb was forced to retire and undergo operations and chemotherapy when he was diagnosed in July 2002 with colon cancer.

"He met it with what I could only describe as bravery and the utmost of courage, " said Mrs. Halcomb. "He was hopeful, yet realistic at the same time.

"He never felt sorry for himself. He never asked, 'Why me?'

"He just wanted to fight it and give himself as much time as he could."

Her husband's physical battle gave Mrs. Halcomb a chance to show him the kind of care and concern he'd long shown her and others.

"He really turned more to our relationship and our love for one another, " said Mrs. Halcomb. "That's where he got his support.

"I'm at peace. I am happy he is not in pain anymore, and I'm especially touched by the outpouring of his community -- the firemen and the police and the EMTs and all the dispatch community.

"They have been working really night and day since his death to make sure his funeral service expresses his individuality."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Halcomb is survived by his parents, Richard Sr. and Faye Halcomb of Falmouth; brothers, Richard Halcomb, Michael Halcomb and Damien Halcomb, all of Falmouth; and nieces and nephews.
