Arline Tobin age 78 of Hudson died Friday, February 7, 2003 at the Christian Community Home. Arline was cremated and wished to have a private interment and service. Arrangements have been entrusted to the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson.
Space Shuttle Columbia Crew was tragically lost February 1, 2003
This is indeed a tragic day for the NASA family, for the families of the astronauts who flew on STS-107, and likewise is tragic for the Nation." Reported Administer Sean O’Keefe shortly after the Columbia Shuttle was feared lost. The Shuttle tragically exploded Saturday morning February 1, 2003 over the skies of Texas. The mission, dedicated strictly to scientific research, was a rare space shuttle flight that did not stop at the international space station. During the 16-day trip, the seven-person crew of the shuttle Columbia worked on more than 80 experiments. The flight, which included the first Israeli astronaut, launched under extremely tight security. Administrator O’Keefe stated, “ the crew was a more courageous group of people you would have ever wanted to know, who gave their lives for our space program.” Included in the crew were: Commander Rick D. Husband age 45 made his second trip into space. The U.S. Air Force colonel and mechanical engineer piloted a shuttle flight in 1999, which included the first docking with the international space station. Pilot William C. McCool age 40, former test pilot, made his first foray into space. The U.S. Navy commander and Naval Academy graduate was responsible for maneuvering the shuttle as part of several experiments. Payload Commander Michael P. Anderson age 42 went into orbit once before, a 1998 shuttle flight that docked with the Russian space station Mir. The U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and physicist was responsible for the shuttle science mission Mission Specialist David M. Brown age 46, The U.S. Navy captain, made his first flight into space. He was an aviator and flight surgeon, was working on many experiments, including numerous biological ones. Mission Specialist Kalpana Chawla age 41 was born in India in 1961; Chawla earned an aerospace engineering doctorate from the University of Colorado in Boulder. Chawla, who has logged more than 375 hours in space, was the prime robotic arm operator on a shuttle flight in 1997. Mission Specialist Laurel Clark age 41, a U.S. Navy commander and flight surgeon, was making her first flight into space. A medical school graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Clark was taking part in a variety of biological experiments. Payload Specialists Ilan Ramon age 47 is the first Israeli astronaut. A colonel and former fighter pilot in the Israeli air force, he saw combat experience in the Yom Kippur War in 1973 and the Lebanon War in 1982. A NASA memorial service at the Johnson Space Center in Houston is scheduled for Tuesday, February 4, 2003. A Time To Remember Memorial has been set for Dan O'Connell and James Ellison who were shot to death one year February 5th, 2002. To Commemorate their lives and memories, a Time To Remember Memorial has been set for 1:00PM Wednesday, February 5, 2003 outside the front doors of the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. A short service is planned outside so please dress warm. Dan and James's memories will always be with us and their spirit is alive in our communities. Munkelwitz, Mark age 24 of Roberts died January 31.
Mark R. Munkelwitz, age 24, of Roberts, died Friday January 31, 2003, as the result of an automobile accident. Mark was born June 23, 1978 in New Richmond, WI the son of Ralph and Kathleen (Hannack) Munkelwitz. He received his education from St. Croix Central grade school and graduated from St. Croix Central High School class of 1996, he attended Alexandria Technical School majoring in Small Engine Repair after which he worked along side his father in the family business, All Season’s Lawn and Sport in New Richmond. Mark was an avid snowmobiler, racing cars, rebuilding engines; he was a member of the F Body Club for car enthusiasts. Surviving are his parents Kathleen and Ralph, sisters Terresa (Brad) Thompson, all of New Richmond, Samantha Munkelwitz of LaCrosse, Alesha Munkelwitz of Oregon City, OR, brother Trevor Munkelwitz of LaCrosse, Chelsey Munkelwitz of New Richmond, nephew and godson Asher, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday February 4, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson, with Pastor Mark Tewes officiating. Burial in Warren Cemetery, Jared Bollom, Cory Coners, Rob Hallquist, Quentin Kahler, Chistopher Hannack, Michael Munkelwitz, Thomas Munkelwitz and Brian Myers will serve as casketbearers. Visititation 4-8 PM Monday February 3, 2003 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Memorials are preferred. Services are entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home.
Janice Bracht age 61 of Hudson died January 29.
Janice Kae Bracht age 61 of Hudson, died Wednesday January 29, 2003 at N. Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN. Janice was born November 2, 1941 in Bismark, N. Dakota the daughter of John and Hilda (Kessler) Glick. She graduated from White Bear High School in Minnesota, then attended the Swedish Hospital of Nursing receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse. She retired from Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN. She was an ordained minister, and very active in her church. Surviving are her husband Donald, son Ty Anderson of Hudson, daughter Tracey (Gary) McReynolds and their children Joel and Jaima of Petersburg, VA; her step-children David (Rhonda) Bracht and their children Stacey and Steven of Somerset, Danny Bracht of New Richmond, her mother Hilda Glick of Hudson; her sister Debbie Glick of St. Paul, MN, she was preceded in death by her father John. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday February 1, 2003 at Harvestime Outreach Church, 498 Jacobs Lane, Hudson, visitation 4-8 PM Friday January 31, 2003 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson and one hour prior to service time at the church on Saturday. Burial will be 10:30 Monday February 3, 2003 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, St. Paul, MN. Memorials are preferred. O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson is assisting the family.
McConaughey, Kent age 29 of Houlton died Monday March 31, 2003.
Kent Rulien McConaughey, age 29 of Maplewood, formerly of Houlton, was tragically taken from us by the hand of another Monday, March 31, 2003 at his residence. Kent was born on July 23, 1973 in Hudson, Wisconsin; the son of Thomas and Carol (Rulien) McConaughey. He received his elementary schooling at Houlton Elementary prior to graduating from Hudson High School in the class of 91’. Following this, he furthered his education by attending the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and River Falls as well as Music Tech in Minneapolis. He worked during the summers for Andersen Windows and for the Target Corporation. Most recently, he was employed for Deluxe Checking in the Twin Cities as a sales consultant. Many came to know and appreciate Kent’s love of music through his musical talents and his band. He played in the Bands; Fool’s Society, Helva, and Pros and Cons of Silence. He developed many friendships and loved entertaining others with his music. He was proud to play many venues including concerts at First Avenue in Minneapolis and Mr. Heavy’s of Menomonie. He also thoroughly enjoyed playing for friends and band backers at X Fest in Somerset. He was also an avid Milwaukee Buck’s basketball fan. To his family and friends, Kent was always there for a smile and laugh. He always knew how to make others laugh. Kent is survived by his parents Tom and Carol of Houlton, siblings Kimberlie (Jon) Gilbertson of Houlton, Kelli (Brian) Beauchamp of Houlton, Kraig (Brenda) McConaughey of Somerset, Kory McConaughey of North Hudson, nieces Beige McConaughey, Alex Beauchamp, Madison Beauchamp, special friends Kelly Stracka of St. Paul, Joaquin Izquierdo of Houlton, as well as many Aunts and Uncles. His maternal and paternal grandparents and infant brother Kevin precede him in death. Funeral Celebration will be 11:00AM Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Hudson with Pastor Dennis Nelson to officiate. Burial will be in the Houlton Cemetery. Active casketbearers will be Harlan Frank, Jason Kobs, Paul Dopkins, Ryan Schultz, Kyle Bonderson, Dan Wiseman, Andy Larson, Jason Rohow, Eric Caukins, Nate Reiter, Donovan Stohlberg, Pastor Matt Larson, and Jeremy Fink. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 until 8PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson and one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday. Vernon Young, age 87 of Baldwin died Thursday at the Baldwin Care Center. Funeral service for Vernon Young will be 2:00PM Saturday April 5th at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin. Burial will be in the Baldwin Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 until 7PM at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin and one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday.
Joan Marlene Walton of Brainerd, formerly Baldwin died March 30.
Joan Marlene Walton age 71 of Brainerd, Mn and formerly of Baldwin passed away peacefully at her home Sunday March 30th after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Richard, children Barbara of Prior Lake, MN, Richard Jr. (Pam) of Baldwin, WI, Diane (Dan) Doll of West Bend, WI, Nicholas of Balsam Lake, WI, 8 grandchildren. Marcel Eugene “Marcy” Olson, age 78, died March 29.
Marcel Eugene “Marcy” Olson, age 78, lifelong Woodville resident, died Saturday March 29, 2003 in the Clairemont Nursing Home in Eau Claire, Wi. Marcy was born August 9, 1924 in Woodville, WI., the son of Andrea and Peter Olson. He received his elementary schooling in Woodville and graduated from Baldwin High School in the class of 1942. In 1942, he enlisted in the armed forces where he served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1945. He furthered his education by attending and graduating from the University of Wisconsin River Falls with a degree in Education. He married
the former Molly Bourn on December 28, 1971 at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville. Marcy retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986 after 33 years as a rural mail carrier. He was a member of the Woodville American Legion Post 301. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and bowling, but most of all loved doing yard work; especially mowing the lawn and plowing snow. Marcy is lovingly survived by his wife, Molly; step-children, Richard Bourn of Woodville, LeAnn (Ventura) Rodriguez of Wilson, Tom (Judy) Bourn of Woodville, Nanette (Mike) Nielsen of Baldwin, Jim (Robin) Bourn of Menomonie, WI., Aleta (Mark) Martell of Dayton, TX., Debbie (Mark) Lee of Glenwood City, WI., Marilyn (Jeff) Riehm of Greenfield, MO and Charlene (Darrell) Wold of Hudson, 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Hanley Olson of Eau Claire, WI., Jerry Olson of Hayward, WI., many nieces and nephews and his special dog Cuddles. His parents; sisters Dora and Nettie; brothers Albert and Arthur precede him in death. Funeral Service Tuesday 11 AM April 1, 2003 at Zion Lutheran Church of Woodville, WI. With Pastor Keith Anderson officiating. Organist Judy Albrightson accompanied the singing of Judy Bourn. Burial with full military honors provided by the Woodville American Legion Post 301 will be in the Sunset cemetery in Woodville. Casketbearers will be his step-sons, Richard, Tom and Jim Bourn and step sons-in-law, Ventura Rodriguez, Mike Nielsen and Darrell Wold. Fuller, Susan Lynn age 48 of Baldwin died March 25.
Susan Lynn Steiner-Fuller age 48 of Baldwin went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Susan was born on May 30, 1954 in Monticello, Iowa; the daughter of James and Virginia (Muller) Steiner. She received her elementary schooling in Monticello prior to attending St. Croix Central and graduating from Baldwin High School in the class of 1972. Following this, she furthered her education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and River Falls and the WITC in New Richmond. She received her education in elementary and secondary education. She worked many years for her parents who owned and operated Steiner Sales and Service performing general office and data entry. She also worked for Dairy Equipment in Woodville and currently was employed by Long Term Care Group in Hudson. Susan was a caring Christian with a strong faith. She shared her faith by setting a good example in her Christian way of life. She made her parents proud of her accomplishments and took great pride of her three children; Erica, Aaron, and Tristan. She taught her children the same values that her parents instilled with her; caring, love, and compassion. She was a proud member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hammond where she taught CCD, served as Eucharistic minister and lector. Susan thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her children; especially camping as they visited many of our state parks. She was a gifted gardener whose prize flower was the rose. Susan was the cherished mother of Erica (Jason) Merritt of Baldwin, Aaron Fuller of Apple Valley, MN., Tristan O’Brien of River Falls, treasured daughter of James and Virginia Steiner of Baldwin, inspiring sister to Sonia Steiner of River Falls, Steven Steiner of Honolulu, HI., Stacey Steiner Janesville, WI., and treasured granddaughter of Veda Muller of Monticello, IA. She is also survived by niece Miranda Sue Steiner, many aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as special friends Karen McCoy, Judy Fuller, Heather Hill, Wendy Stone and her beloved cats Snuffy, Oreo, Ebony, and Harvey. Her maternal grandfather Walter Muller and paternal grandparents Carl and Anna Steiner precede her in death. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30AM Saturday, March 29, 2003 at ST. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hammond with Father William Murphy officiating with Fr. James Kracker con-celebrating. Organist Jane Thompson accompanied the special singing of Shelly Bell. Burial will be in the church cemetery with casketbearers being Tristan O’Brien, Aaron Fuller, Craig Muller, Stacey Steiner, Josh Richert, Gary Wernimont, Stan Thompson and Chad Hauschildt. Visitation will be Friday from 5 until 8PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin and one hour prior to the mass at church Saturday morning. Memorials preferred.

Bakke, Gordon age 77 of Woodville died May 26
Gordon “Gordy” Junior Bakke age 77 of Woodville and longtime Pleasant Valley resident died Monday May 26, 2003 at his residence following an apparent heart attack. Gordy was born on December 23, 1925 on the Pleasant Valley farmstead; the son of Oscar and Inga (North) Bakke. He received his schooling from Pleasant Valley Grade School and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1944. He was baptized and confirmed a lifelong member of Rush River Lutheran Church. Gordy never married
and farmed his entire life. His love of the land and beauty of life inspired him to be a dedicated and devoted farmer. Although Gordy was a private person, he loved his family and spending time with them. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle, and generous brother, uncle, and friend. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed fishing with his brothers earlier in life. Gordy is survived by his siblings Hazel Stinson of Baldwin, Marion Olson of River Falls, Howard (Maxine) Bakke of Baldwin, Doris Ramberg of River Falls, Corrine Wogan of Dawson, MN., Walter (Helen) Bakke of Hudson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Lyle, and niece Diane Ramberg Klein. Funeral service will be 2:00PM Thursday May 29 at Rush River Lutheran Church. Pastor T. Michael Harty to officiate. Organist Phyllis Chapin to accompany vocalist Larry Knutson. Burial in church cemetery with casketbearers being Keith Olson, Bruce Ramberg, Wayne Ramberg, Kent Bakke, Brian Ramberg, and Clifford Bakke. Memorials preferred.
