J.L. 'Jack' Feldmann, 86, Post employee, volunteer
John L. "Jack" Feldmann, who in a 48-year career with the Kentucky and Cincinnati Post newspapers rose from copy boy to business manager, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was 86.
Mr. Feldmann spent most of his near half-century with the papers working out of The Kentucky Post's Covington office, where he was an ad salesman before being promoted to business manager. He later served in the latter position at The Cincinnati Post.
"His job was to make sure the papers were making money, " said Mr. Feldmann's widow, Romilda Steffen Feldmann of Perry Park.
During his newspaper career, Mr. Feldmann was very active in his community. He was a past president of the Covington Rotary Club and the Northern Kentucky St. Vincent de Paul Society, a former board member of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, a former Cold Spring volunteer firefighter and a former member of the Cold Spring planning board.
He helped to get the Panorama Apartments for seniors built in Covington and served as president of its board for six years.
After retirement, the Feldmanns spent two years building a home at the Perry Park golf resort in Owen County. There, Mr. Feldmann liked to do woodworking, play golf and cook.
"He collected recipes, " said a daughter, Tressie Lewis of Cincinnati.
Her husband was a "happy-go-lucky guy who always had a joke or a story, " said Romilda Feldmann. "Even after he got sick, he always had a smile for the nurses."
His health failed in the last year, she said, when he had two bypass surgeries and two strokes.
His first wife, Sarah Donelan Feldmann, died in 1960. Survivors, in addition to his wife and daughters, include sons, Richard J. Feldmann of Bromley, Donald R. Feldmann and David T. Feldmann, both of Cincinnati, and Daniel J. Feldmann of Alexandria; another daughter, Phyllis A. Weber of St. James City, Fla.; a brother, Alvin Feldmann of Newport Beach, Calif.; sisters, Irma Quitter of Cold Spring, Mary Jane Nie of Independence and Vera Vodicka of Florence; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Paul J. Balash Sr., 87, of Batavia, Ohio, died Monday at Batavia Nursing Center. He was a retired maintenance foreman with Mosler Lock and Safe Co., Hamilton, Ohio, and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Bina Mains Balash, died in 2000.
Survivors include a daughter, Charlene Bender of Fairfield, Ohio; sons, Paul Balash Jr. of Hillsboro, Ohio, and Ronald Balash of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Wayne C. Beck, 80, of Foster, died at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. He was a truck driver and farmer and a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria. His wife, Augusta Thomas Beck, died in 2001. A son, Carl N. Beck, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, John Beck of Irregon, Ore.; daughters, Mary Beck of Odessa, Fla., Viki Beck of Cincinnati, Geneva Reimer of Independence and Duane Sublett of San Diego; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Alexandria. Visitation will begin there at 2 p.m. Saturday. Mary Sue Burton, 46, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Sylvester Burton; a son, Sylvester Burton Jr. of Covington; daughters, Loretta Walker, Vanessa Walker and Tiffany Webb, both of Covington; her father, Thomas Webb of Covington; brothers, Thomas Webb, William Webb, Kenneth Webb, Stephen Webb, Joseph Webb and Shawn Webb, all of Covington; and eight grandchildren.
Services were this morning at First Baptist Church, Burlington. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Jones, Simpson & Gee Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Haley Collins and Bayley Collins, twin daughters of Tommy and Andrea Collins of Falmouth, died shortly after birth Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include grandparents, Terry and Shirley Russell of Verona, Stephen Pennington of Washington, D.C., Patsy Patrick of Jackson, Tommy Collins of Oxford, Ohio, and Willard Shelton of Falmouth; and great-grandparents, Robert and Shirley Meade of North Carolina, Thelma Patrick of Williamsburg and Peggy Pennington of West Moreland, Tenn.

Robert Connolly, 57, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Anne Wehrend, and a brother, Donald Connolly, both of Cincinnati.

Robert Daniel Sr., 68, of Alexandria, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include sons, Dennis R. Daniel of Alexandria, Randall L. Daniel of Kentucky and Robert L. Daniel of Boone County; sisters, Lucille First of Fort Thomas, Rosella Henson of Newport and Opal Richmond of Alexandria; and two grandchildren.

Gary Adams Fields, 69, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Cynthiana, died Saturday in Fort Lauderdale. He was a security officer and an Air Force veteran.

James William Hunt, 76, of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Jewish Hospital, Louisville. He was a retired employee of Austin Tobacco Co. A son, George William Hunt, preceded him in death.

Bennie F. Macon, 64, of Covington, died Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a laborer with Vulcan Waterproofing Co.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Macon; a son, Bennie Macon of Dalton, Ga.; daughters, Thelma J. Johnson of Cincinnati and Joyce Cowart of Covington; a brother, Vonell Allen of Tennessee; a sister, Minnie Rhodes of Georgia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Tommy Neal, 74, of Newport, died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Fort Thomas. He was a retired laborer and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Naomi Turner Neal, died in 1987. Sons, Carl Turner and Jesse Turner, both preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Brenda Harrison of Bellevue, Jacqueline Dalton of Covington and Alice Gross of Cincinnati; a son, Tim Turner of Silver Grove; a sister, Billie Cook of Tennessee; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Marien McDanell Plunkett, 80, of Fort Mitchell, died Tuesday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Right to Life. She was one of the organizers of the perpetual adoration at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Her husband, William Alexander Plunkett, died in 1992.
Survivors include daughters, Marian Alexis Chetwood, Patricia Sharon Bethell, Sheila Diane Appel, Deborah Jeanne Roberts and Judy Karen Janson; sons, James Michael Plunkett, William Gregory Plunkett and David Richard Plunkett; 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Fern Gasdorf Revell, 78, of Cold Spring, died at 5:25 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a former member of St. Joseph School Mothers Club and Notre Dame Academy Parent Teacher Organization. Her husband, William W. Revell, died in 2000.
Survivors include a daughter, Michelle Johnson of Edgewood, and a grandson.

Lawrence Lamb Shadd, 68, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Cynthiana, died Tuesday at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. He was a retired Air Force security officer and an assistant football coach with Lake Gibson, Fla., High School.
Survivors include his wife, Lueanna Shadd; sons, Lawrence L. Shadd III of Bowling Green, Taylor E. Shadd of Louisville and Nathan J. Shadd of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Robin K. Crutcher of Hendersonville, Tenn.; sisters, Martha Geoghegen and Helen McNees, both of Cynthiana; and two grandchildren.
