'Captain' Chapman of Anchor Grill
The legendary Anchor Grill in Covington has lost its captain.
Morton B. Chapman, 91, of Covington, founder with his wife of Covington's 24-hour restaurant, died at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday at his home of complications from lymphoma
Mr. Chapman, who was known as "captain, " was a constant figure at the 438 Pike St. restaurant that he opened with his wife in 1946. "We may doze, but never close, " reads a sign that has been in the window for 57 years.
He was born in Russell, near Flatwoods in Greenup County.
He was a member of Col. Clay Masonic Lodge No. 159 F&AM, the Scottish Rite Valley of Covington, York Rite, Syrian Temple, Royal Arch of Scotland, White Syrian Shrine and Rosebud Chapter No. 39 Order of the Eastern Star. His wife, Virginia Yelton Chapman, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Chapman of Covington.
Ken Unkraut, Chapman's nephew, took a minute from working an early shift to reminisce about his uncle: "Up to two weeks prior to his death, he was doing dishes, " Unkraut said.
Everyone called Morton Chapman "Captain" because of the captain's hat he always wore, Unkraut said. "He loved boats. He loved the river. When he was younger he owned wooden Cris Craft boats."
Chapman, like his late wife, Virginia, was known for his kindness. He was never without a cigar.
"He loved kids. Every kid that came in here before they walked out the door, they got suckers. He always passed out suckers."
"In the early years, he did it all, " at the restaurant, Unkraut said.
When Chapman took a break at the restaurant that has served so many breakfasts, lunches, dinners and late-night snacks, it was with a plate of a Grill signature dish: biscuits and sausage gravy.
