Katie Redman, co-founded fire dept.
Catherine "Katie" Redman of Morning View and her husband helped found the Kenton Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1950s.

"I had an aunt who lived about four miles south of here, and her house caught on fire and the fire department had to come from Independence. It took so long for them to get there that the neighbors had all gotten together and had the fire out when the fire department got here, " said daughter Barbara J. Dirkes of Morning View.

"So about six or seven couples got together and said, 'We need a fire department here, ' and worked very hard to get it."

Mrs. Redman also helped found the fire department's Ladies Auxiliary.

"She was very friendly and never met a stranger, " Mrs. Dirkes said of her mother. "She always tried to comfort people and help them any way she could."

Mrs. Redman, 79, of Morning View, died Friday at her home.

Mrs. Redman grew up in Newport and often shared memories of the 1937 flood.

"Her father was real sick, " Mrs. Dirkes said, "and he needed to get out, and they got a flatboat there, but it didn't have enough room for my mother and her nephew, so they had to wait until they finally flagged down a canoe.

"She always said they stepped out of the second floor and right into the canoe."

Mrs. Redman and her husband, John J. Redman, 84, celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on the Fourth of July.

"She liked to say her marriage started with a bang, and that's the way it went for most of the time, " Mrs. Dirkes laughed.

"After she married, she was mostly at home, helping Daddy and raising us five kids. She was a wonderful mother."

Mrs. Redman liked to sew when she was younger. Later in life, she enjoyed playing cards and reading.
