Virginia Obel, taught Sunday school 62 years

Church was one of the constants in the life of Virginia Ellen Obel.

Mrs. Obel, 79, who died Monday at her home, the Baptist Convalescent Center in Newport, was a 45-year member of the Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Latonia Lakes.

She taught Sunday school there and enjoyed singing in the choir.

She started teaching Sunday school when she was 17, at South Side Baptist Church in Covington, and never stopped, said her son, David Obel of Cold Spring.

She sang with her father, the late Frank Miller, when she was a little girl and he played the violin in a band. She sang on WLW radio with a sister when she was 6 years old.

The former Taylor Mill resident married John William "Bill" Obel and became a homemaker and mother to three children. She made sure that David and his friends made it to all their baseball, basketball and football games.

"I can never thank her enough for that, " her son said.

For her 40th wedding anniversary, her children sent her and her husband on a trip to Washington, D.C., by train. Soon after the trip, in 1991, Bill Obel died.

"She was never the same after dad died, " David Obel said. "They were so close and did everything together."
