Charles Bailey, 82, star athlete, hall of famer

Charles "Chuck" Bailey had aspirations of playing college football after being one of the top scorers in Northern Kentucky high schools as a running back for the Ludlow High Panthers during the 1939 season.

But world events -- World War II -- derailed his plans, and instead of toting the pigskin for the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, he spent four years as a crewman on a Coast Guard cutter in the North Atlantic.

He returned to Western after being discharged from the service, but didn't stay. He came home to Northern Kentucky and got a job with Cincinnati Bell, for whom he worked the rest of his career -- 35 years.

Still, football "meant a lot to him, " said his wife, Betty Botkin Bailey, so he was gratified during the 1990s to be inducted into the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

Mr. Bailey, of Florence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. He was 82.

He began as a cable splicer with the phone company and worked his way up into management.

After he retired about 20 years ago, he and his wife began splitting time between Florence and a home in Seminole, Fla. They returned to Northern Kentucky for good about five years ago, because of health problems.

The Baileys recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary, a fact that Mrs. Bailey was particularly proud of because of the predictions about them when they wed. "He was so much older than me (nine years) that people were saying it wouldn't last six months, " she said.

"I was lucky to have him, he was a fine person, " she added. "I couldn't have had a better husband."

Mr. Bailey, who was also an accomplished basketball player for Ludlow, was a member of the Ludlow Alumni Association Hall of Fame, the Bromley VFW and the Masonic Order.

A son, David Charles Bailey, preceded him in death.
