Clarence Neltner, ace produce grower
Clarence Neltner was one of the best known vegetable and fruit growers in Northern Kentucky.

He raised a wide variety of crops on a family farm in Camp Springs and was a familiar sight to people who came to the farm to buy produce and to folks who frequented farmers' markets throughout Northern Kentucky, Indiana and Cincinnati.

"He put in long, hard hours, but he enjoyed it, " said Mr. Neltner's wife of 39 years, Claire Neltner. "It was his life."

Mr. Neltner, 63, died Monday at his home in Camp Springs.

He was born and reared on a family farm where his father and grandfather also grew vegetables.

Mr. Neltner's favorite crops were strawberries, raspberries, melons and tomatoes. He also grew squash, peppers, potatoes, greens, turnips and a variety of fruit.

"We don't raise a lot of anything, " he said in a 1994 interview with The Kentucky Post. "The reason we have so many different things and not too much of any one thing, by not being overloaded, you get a decent price."

It was also important to pick only a limited amount of a crop each day.

"You never pick a whole field, " he said. "You pick a row. That way it's fresh. You just pick as much as you can sell."

Selling required the farmer to also be a "diplomat, " noted Mr. Neltner.

"You've got to be able to deal with the public, " he said.

Family and friends helped Mr. Neltner with the farming and selling.

"That way we got to spend a lot of time together, " said Mrs. Neltner. "Clarence enjoyed talking with people and he made lots of friends. He was a very easygoing person. He never lost his temper."

In the winter, Mr. Neltner did carpentry work.

Claire Neltner said her family will try to keep growing and selling vegetables.

"That's what Clarence would want us to do, " she said. "But Clarence took a lot of farming knowledge with him. We're just wondering if he gave us enough knowledge."

Mr. Neltner was a member of St. Joseph Church in Camp Springs and the Campbell County Farm Bureau, and was president of the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana Tailgate Market Association. He also served as treasurer of the Campbell County Farmers' Market Association.
