Bruce Schwarberg, 16-year Army veteran
Bruce Schwarberg shouldn't have made it this long. Diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2002, doctors didn't think he would see another autumn day at his Southgate home. They were wrong.
"He was such a strong man, strong physically and strong-willed, " said his sister, Karen Schwarberg of Dayton. "It's the only way he made it as long as he did. He wanted to go to Florida one more time, and they just got back a couple of weeks ago."
Mr. Schwarberg, 59, died Thursday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati. A 16-year veteran of the Army, he served a stint as a photographer during the Vietnam War, seeing things through his camera that, his sister is sure, tested his strength.
"Almost never, did he talk about it, " Ms. Schwarberg said. "I think the things he saw there were so terrible, he just didn't want to talk about them. He didn't want to think about it. So he didn't."
After returning home from the military, he worked for the Kentucky National Guard and the Internal Revenue Service before becoming a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service with routes in Dayton, Bellevue and Newport. He worked for the federal government his entire life, and a sense of duty carried over into his social life.
Mr. Schwarberg was a service officer for the American Legion in Newport, an adjunct for the Kersten O'Day VFW Post No. 2899 in Dayton, and commander of Amvets Post No. 35, Covington.
"He was the kind of man that stood up for the rights of others and said what he had to say, " said his sister. "Some people may not have liked him for that, but he did what he thought was right."
