Esther Volpenhein, noted cook, hostess
Esther E. Berling Volpenhein of Park Hills was a homemaker whose reputation as a cook and a hostess reached beyond her husband and four children.
That was apparent when she and her husband, Joseph "Whitey" Volpenhein, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September 2001, and relatives read letters they'd composed about the couple.
"Several of my cousins said they always enjoyed coming to parties at my house because my parents always had the best parties, " said daughter Mary Jo McFadden, of Fort Wright.
"My mom always had such good food and games for the kids to play.
"One person said, 'Thanks for all you've done to keep our family close.'"
Mrs. Volpenhein died Tuesday morning at her home. She was 79.
Born and reared in Covington, Mrs. Volpenhein became a fixture at St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright.
Her faith was extremely important to her, McFadden said.
"Even as a child I can remember going to different religious services like the Sorrowful Mother Novena on Friday nights and the Rosary during May. We obviously went to Mass every Sunday."
Mrs. Volpenhein also was a member of Hilltoppers, a senior citizens social club in Fort Wright.
"She would do what she could to help anybody else, " McFadden said.
