Helen Collins, recognized as 'outstanding volunteer'
Helen Jane Elliott Collins was a volunteer at numerous Northern Kentucky organizations and a member of several educational groups.
"She wanted to give back, " said her daughter-in-law, Donna Collins of Florence. "She grew up during the Depression and did without a lot. Then, as she was able to work, she wanted to always give back for what she had."
Mrs. Collins, 89, of Florence, died Monday at the St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
She was a former quality controller for Levi Strauss and after she retired served as the company's first retiree coordinator.
Mrs. Collins belonged to the First Church of Christ in Burlington and was a member of the Kenton County Better Schools Committee and the Kentucky PTA.
She volunteered at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence, the Boone County Board of Education, the Boone County Fair Board, Maplewood Home for Children, Ruth Barry Women's Club, and Sunglow Homemakers.
Her love for Florence High School, from which she was graduated in 1932, prompted her to help start the school annual reunion.
"She won several 'outstanding volunteer' awards and touched a lot of people's lives, " said Donna Collins. "She was particularly interested in young people.
"She never met a stranger. She loved people. She was an only child, but she was never alone."
She was a lifelong member of the Republican Party and a former member of the Boone County Republicans' executive committee.
Mrs. Collins' husband, J.T. Collins, preceded her in death.
Other survivors include a daughter, Shirley Collins McCausland of Gulf Shores, Ala.; a son, William Randall Collins of Florence; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home in Florence.
A graveside funeral service will be held immediately following at Independence Cemetery.

Rick L. Banfield, 45, of Covington, died Tuesday at his home. He was an employee of the Internal Revenue Service, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Mary K. Pfeffer Banfield; a son, Nicholas Banfield, at home; his parents, Leon and Jeneva Pollard; a brother, Chris Pollard; and sisters, Pam Douglas and Julie Ham.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick Church, Maysville. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Clement Leo Bezold, 80, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired director and appraiser with Sunrise Federal Savings and Loan Association, Newport, and a member of Fort Thomas Lions Club, Bellevue Vets and Newport Lodge No. 273 BPOE, Cold Spring. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Mills Bezold; daughters, Linda Crawford, Sally Schatteman and Carole Witte, all of Fort Thomas; a son, Clement Leo Bezold Jr. of Alexandria; sisters, Anna Merling of Miami and Rose Ellen Sparks of Boca Raton, Fla.; a brother, Henry E. Bezold of Miami; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, with Elks services at 7 p.m. Prayers will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Marjorie Campbell, 79, of Newport, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday at her daughter's home in Erlanger. She was a homemaker and a member of James W. Costigan American Legion Post in Newport and the ladies auxiliary of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662, Newport. She was a volunteer with Senior Citizens of Northern Kentucky. Her husband, Roy Campbell, died in 1981. A son, Walter Campbell, died in 1984. A daughter, Lillian Callahan, died in 2001.
Survivors include sons, Augustus Melchion and Anthony Melchion, both of Cincinnati, Roy Campbell of Newport, George Campbell of Ludlow and Russell Campbell of Bellevue; daughters, Midge Hitt of Butler, Peggy Schweitzer of Erlanger and Margie Walz of Bellevue; sisters, Berletta Bernhard of Morrow, Ohio, and Betty Beckwith of Cincinnati; 35 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
George R. "Bob" Durham, 79, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a general yardmaster with Southern Railway.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Rae Durham; sons, Robert Ray Durham of Cape Coral, Fla., Joe Stuart Durham of Birmingham, Ala., and David Elwyn Durham of Naples, Fla.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery.
Delores Jean Fisk, 72, of Hallandale, Fla., formerly of Independence, died Sunday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

William Hebbeler, 78, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Marion Tripoli Loschiavo, 81, of Edgewood, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a former member of Summit Hills Country Club in Crestview Hills. Her husband, Andrew Loschiavo, died March 4.
Survivors include sons, Drew Loschiavo of Fort Wright and Mark Loschiavo of West Chester, Pa.; daughters, Linda Loschiavo of Lakeland, Fla., and Barbara Voet of Louisville; sisters, Frances Steve and Delores Vecchiola, both of Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rita Thelma Pennington Marsh, 82, of Verona, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Verona. Her husband, Ralph Marsh, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Ronnie Marsh and Gary Marsh, both of Verona, Bill Marsh of Lady Lake, Fla., and Curt Marsh of Florence; daughters, Joy Owen and Rita Doerr, both of Verona; a sister, Margaret Edge of Troutwood, Ohio; half-sisters, Lucy Eckler of Florence and Leon Pennington of Mason, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth McFarland Massey, 73, of Newport, died at 9:14 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Larry Freimuth of Bellevue; sisters, Mary Bales of Covington and Matilda Payne of Florence; a brother, Houston McFarland of Cincinnati; a half-sister, Viola Hutson of Paris; a half-brother, William McFarland of Tampa, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Tilford E. "Pete" Menefee, 90, of Demossville, died at Tuesday at Veteran's Hospital in Cincinnati. He was an Army veteran and a member of the Wilmington Baptist Church.
Survivors include five sons, James Menefee of Piner, Michael Menefee of Fiskburg, Ike Menefee of Fiskburg, Roger Menefee of Maysville and Gary Menefee of Piner; three daughters, Regina Menefee Webber, of Eckenhagen, Germany, Rebecca McNamee, of Crittenden, Oma Renee Acree of Independence; two brothers, Lloyd Menefee of Louisville and Marvin Menefee of Latonia; a sister Naomi Phillips of Latonia; 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home in Independence, with the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery.
