James Scanlan, 90, former federal agent
James D. Scanlan spent 20 years as an investigator for the U.S. Treasury Department in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia investigating tax cases relating to cigarette and alcoholic beverages.
Early in his career that made him a "revenooer, " one of the federal agents who sought out and busted up moonshine stills.
"He did some of that, mostly down in the mountains, " said a son, Dr. Dennis Scanlan, of Nova Scotia, Canada "He was doing what the ATF does today, except not with the firearms."
He referred to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
James Scanlan, of Erlanger, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was 90.
He came to the Treasury Department with a background in law enforcement and investigation. He was a police officer in Louisville for a few years -- his duties included driving the mayor -- and before that he worked in the criminal investigation section for the Army during World War II.
Mr. Scanlan was an Eagle Scout and a Scout leader as an adult.
He was a member of Shawnee American Legion Post in Louisville and St. Henry Church, Elsmere.
Survivors in addition to his son include his wife, Frances Scanlan, and a grandchild.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Henry Church. Cremation will be at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.
Christy Lynne Brashear, 29, of Glencoe, died Wednesday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton.
Survivors include her mother, Hazel Gullion Brashear of Erlanger; her father and stepmother, Don and Adria Brashear of Warsaw; a brother, Pete Haynes of Gainesville, Fla.; sisters, Terry Moore of Langley, Va., Leslie Holloway of Clearwater, Fla., and Missy Candiano of Westfield, Mass.; a stepsister, Rachel Rassman of Warsaw; and step-grandmother, Louise Wilson of Warsaw.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery. Mattie T. Gullion, 82, of Worthville, died Thursday at Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, Carrollton. She was a homemaker and a member of Worthville Baptist Church. Her first husband, Robert W. Stewart; second husband, Prentice J. Gullion; a daughter, Mollie Elizabeth Stewart; and a son, James Ray Stewart, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Dru Maiden of Carrollton; sons, Robert W. Stewart and Joel Stewart, both of Worthville; sisters, Mary Mefford of Ghent and Ruth Kemper of Worthville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Worthville Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Dallasburg Masonic Cemetery, Wheatley. Memorials are suggested to Worthville Baptist Church, 53 Jackson Ridge Road, Carrollton, Ky. 41098.
William Hebbeler, 78, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a typesetter with Otto Printing Co., Newport, and a member of Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. He was a Member of American Legion Post No. 203, Latonia, the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, Moose Lodge No. 14698 in Taylor Mill and the Cincinnati Typesetters Union.
Survivors include sisters, Mary Buhr and Jo Whelan, both of Fort Wright; nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, Covington. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Elmer F. "Goose" Mers, 93, of Maysville, died at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday at Maysville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was a retired grocery store clerk in Slip-Up and Mays Lick, and a former employee of Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. He was a member of Shannon United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men. His wife, Garnett "Pooch" Middleton Mers, died in 1998. A daughter, Betty Jo Mers, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Pfeffer and Ann Mers, both of Maysville; brothers, Emery Mers of Bethel, Ohio, and Eugene Mers of Florida; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Shannon United Methodist Church, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Mays Lick.

Mark William "Horse" Sabelhaus, 47, of Walton, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Kensey LaShae Smith, 8 weeks, died Tuesday at home.
Survivors include parents, Derrick Jermaine Morton and Lindsey Kaye Smith, both of Covington; a brother, Tristan Jacobs of Covington; sisters, Mercedes Smith and Brianna Smith, both of Covington; and grandparents, Ken and Mary Smith of Taylor Mill, and Jamie Gentry of Covington.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Erlanger Baptist Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Norman L. Wainscott, 76, of Corinth, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a laborer with the State of Kentucky and a member of Lawrenceville Baptist Church.
Survivors include sisters, Inez Kinman of Dry Ridge and Melrose Lynn of Williamstown.
