Paul Miller, radio personality, executive

If you saw a car flying off a building in downtown Cincinnati in the 1950s, there was a good chance that Paul Miller was behind it.

The WCKY radio personality and executive, who died early Sunday, was known for his knack of "attracting attention."

"He was really as good a promotion person as there was in the business, " said son Nick Miller, who followed his father into a career in radio. Mr. Miller, 77, of Anderson Township, died at Hospice of Cincinnati after an eight-week fight with pneumonia.

He spent 25 years in the radio business, six of them as regional vice president for the Post Newsweek Company that owned WCKY, a 50, 000 watt station that played Perry Como-type adult contemporary in the daytime and blanketed the entire South with country music at night.

The car flying off the downtown building was to illustrate the impact of a collision on a car -- and to attract attention to the station's outstanding traffic and safety programming.

During his career, Mr. Miller had the chance to interview convicted murderers, Army generals and pop stars; work with his radio idol Jack Benny; help negotiate the contract to broadcast the Cincinnati Reds games; and mentor students trying to break into the business -- including "Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling and actor Jonathan Winters.

Eldest son Tim Miller, senior policy adviser for Cincinnati Congressman Rob Portman, said of his dad, "He was the role model. This was a guy who pulled himself up by the bootstraps. He was a self-made man, became very successful in his business and succeeded at everything he wanted to do and gave me a good work ethic."

Born in Lancaster, Ohio, Miller attended high school there and studied management at Harvard University later in life. He was a Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

He had been married to his Lancaster, Ohio, sweetheart, Delores Miller for 57. For the last seven years, he had been helping her deal with the effects of Alzheimer's.

Miller was the brother of 13-term Republican Congressman Clarence Miller, who represented the 10th district covering southeastern Ohio for 26 years before retiring.

"He was helpful on legislation, we'd call him for advice. He kept up with what was going on and he would give me a good idea of what the local people were thinking, " Clarence Miller said, from his home in Lancaster.

On a personal level, Clarence Miller said, "You couldn't have a better brother."
