Richard Roberts, trucker, youth coach
When he was young and single, Richard R. "Red" Roberts played semi-professional football with abandon.
Then came a wife and plans for children. Mr. Roberts knew it was time to hang up his cleats.
Years later, he still couldn't get athletics, and football in particular, out of his blood.
For his seven children and scores of others, he was a youth football and baseball coach, a soccer and softball mentor.
He volunteered with the Ludlow AC Club and later coached the Kentucky Stallions semi-professional football team.
Mr. Roberts, 63, of Ludlow, died of cancer at 7:50 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a retired truck driver with Advance Transportation, Cincinnati, and a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 100.
He was also a member of Mother of God Church in Covington, Father Kehoe Council Knights of Columbus and Ludlow Senior Citizens.
He considered himself lucky, said his wife, Charlotte A. Holt Roberts.
"He always said he wasn't afraid to die because he got to do the two things that were most important to him -- drive a truck and play football, " Mrs. Roberts said. "We weren't rich enough he could take a lot of time off, but he was always involved in sports with the kids."
A committed extrovert, he could converse with anyone about anything as if talking to a long-lost pal, Mrs. Roberts said. "He didn't know any strangers, " she said. "And hardly anyone knew him by his given name. But they knew 'Red.'"
