Wilhelmina Garnett, St. Henry volunteer
Wilhelmina "Billie" Garnett made a name for herself, but not always in the same place and not even always the same name.
In the 1940s, she and her husband, William E. Garnett, were archery champions, capturing numerous competitions across Northern Kentucky.
From 1947 to about 1962, she was co-owner of Garnett's Grocery, a mom-and-pop store on Garvey Avenue in Elsmere that was mostly "Mom" because "Pop" was usually off working on the railroad.
And from the late 1950s to the late 1960s, she was a ubiquitous volunteer at St. Henry church and school in Els-mere, where she was president of the PTA, a volunteer secretary in the parish office, a member of the Women's Sodality and a faithful volunteer in the school cafeteria. In the last, she was universally known as "Pinkie."
"That was because she always wore a pink uniform, " said her daughter, Nancy McGuire, of Burlington.
Mrs. Garnett, formerly of Elsmere, died Sunday at Baptist Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was 91.
Her mother helped out at St. Henry, where she was a member for 81 years, because she was devoted to her family and committed to her faith, McGuire said. "She was a very religious woman who helped whomever she could by doing whatever needed to be done, " her daughter said.
Later in life, Mrs. Garnett had a circle of friends with whom she played cards and went out to eat. She also was a member of the Tri-City Senior Citizens.
She was a former secretary for Baldwin Piano Co.
"She was kind of quiet if you didn't know her, " said McGuire. "She was gentle and had a good sense of humor. She was a wonderful Mom."
Her husband died in 1998. Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Marilyn Finch, and a great-grandson, Darin Patrick Dunn.
In addition to her daughter, survivors include a son, Raymond Garnett of Florence; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
