Loretta Oberst, aided kids with speech
For more than 30 years, Loretta "Lori" Ann Oberst taught Newport children with speech problems how to communicate.
"She especially enjoyed her career and working with children, " said her fianc, Mark Kroeger of Cincinnati. "She saw it as a life's work, and one that had great meaning and purpose."
Ms. Oberst, 60, who died Tuesday at her Cincinnati home, grew up in Rochester, N.Y., and learned how to be a speech and language pathologist at the State University of New York/Fredonia.
She came to Newport in 1969 and started the speech pathology program for the Newport school system.
She continued to do supervisory work for the program after she retired in 1999 because of illness.
She had contracted multiple myeloma, which she fought through chemotherapy for about four years, Kroeger said, before it took her life.
"She fought it very courageously, " he said. "She never let it become the dominant part of her life. Certainly, she tried to live every day for the value of it, and she did a great job."
When she wasn't working, she spent time with the Cincinnati Caledonian Pipes and Drums, in which her son, Michael, played the bagpipes. They traveled to Ireland and Scotland together because of that interest.
She also was an amateur gardener who liked to grow flowers at her home. She also liked to ski.
"She was a warm and friendly person who enjoyed life and enjoyed people, " Kroeger said.
