W. Lloyd McCubbin found strength in church, family
W. Lloyd McCubbin devoted the last quarter-century of his life to his family, his church and his faith.
Mr. McCubbin, of Sanders, died Thursday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was 73.
When he became a born-again Christian, Mr. McCubbin "did a complete turnaround, " said a son, J. Esley McCubbin, of Sanders.
"Before that, he had no problem drinking or gambling, " Esley McCubbin said. "The day he accepted Christ, he poured every drop of liquor in the house down the drain. The first question he asked somebody new was, 'Are you saved?' And if he wasn't satisfied with their answer, he'd start preaching to them."
Mr. McCubbin spent 21 years as Sunday school superintendent and custodian at Beaver Lick Baptist Church in Boone County.
"The custodian's job was supposed to be part-time but he pretty much did it full-time, " Esley McCubbin said.
Mr. McCubbin retired in 1980 after 30 years at the General Motors plant in Norwood, Ohio. He was a member of the United Auto Workers of America.
Surviving in addition to his son are his wife, Carole McCubbin; sons, Stacey McCubbin of Sanders, W. Wesley McCubbin of Piner, L. Leslie McCubbin of Walton and Troy L. McCubbin of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.; stepdaughters, Lisa Williams of Fort Mitchell, Lori Duell of Hidden Valley, Tenn., Joy L. Lukey of Taylor Mill and Rae Jean Jansen of Ludlow; a brother, Eldon McCubbin of Union; a sister, Alma Sallee of Walton; 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Bend Methodist Cemetery, Boone County. Larry Grubenhoff, 40, of Elsmere, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a customer service agent with DHL Worldwide Express and a member of Heritage Fellowship, Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Grubenhoff; his mother, Stella Grubenhoff of Cincinnati; brothers, John Grubenhoff, Ray Grubenhoff and Mike Grubenhoff, all of Cincinnati; and a sister, Diane Prater of Cincinnati.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Heritage Fellowship, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Heritage Fellowship Missions Program, 7216 U.S. 42, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Norma Ward Hay, 82, of Maysville, died at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was owner of Maysville Office Equipment and the Hay House of Hallmark, both in Maysville. Her husband, William A. Hay, died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, William A. Hay Jr. of Sadieville; brothers, J.D. Ward of Fleming County, Helman Ward of Maysville and Clarence Ward of Asheville, N.C.; and a grandson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Brell & Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. today. Burial will be in Maysville Cemetery.
Beverly Jean Heidebrink, 65, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at her home. She was a retired restaurant manager for Mike Fink & Thomasville.
Survivors include sons, John Crider of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Frank Heidebrink of Burlington; daughters, Jeanni Duncan of Islamorada, Fla., Susan Keefer of Fort Thomas, Dianna Politano of Richmond, Va., and Kimberly Pollitt of Cold Spring; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Marshall J. Ivey, 72, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired salesman and an Air Force veteran. A daughter, Jennifer Ivey, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Marshall Ivey of Oxford, N.H.; a daughter, Beth Ivey of Independence; a brother, Dale Ivey of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Cincinnati. Mr. Ivey bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Benny T. Johnson Sr., 66, of Ludlow, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Betty L. Jones, 76, of Latonia, died at 11:45 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired employee of American Airlines at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, a member of Latonia Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a brother, Marvin R. Jones of South Vienna, Ohio, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, Springfield, Ohio. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Hazel Grace Kowalsky, 80, of Florence, died Tuesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a retired clerk for Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. Survivors include her husband, William Kowalsky; daughters, Patricia Kowalsky of Florence and Joanne Kowalsky-Miller of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, William Kowalsky of San Diego; sisters, Alice Greer of Long Island, N.Y, and Helen Alek of St. Louis; and a grandchild.

Florence D. Leach, 92, of Lakeside Park, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center, Fort Mitchell. Her husband, Milburn T. Leach, and daughter, Pat Harmeling, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, William Leach of Palatka, Fla.; daughters, Jeanne Theissen of Fort Wright, Joyce A. Leach of Lakeside Park and Kathleen Heuser of Ashland, Mass.; 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

William Russell "Rus" Linville, 82, of Lewisburg, died Wednesday at University Medical Center, Lexington. He was a retired carpenter, a member of Grace Baptist Church in Maysville and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include sisters, Ruth Adamson Burns of Lewisburg and Lillian Frakes of Carlisle.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home, Mays Lick. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Green Acres Cemetery, Mays Lick.
Pauline Crittendon McClanahan, 95, of Dayton, died Wednesday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto, Southhaven, Miss. She was a nurse's aide for St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas and a member of Dayton Baptist Church. Her husband, Arnold McClanahan, died in 1981. A son, Gene Crittendon, died in 1970.
Survivors include a son, Bob Crittendon of Dayton; a daughter, JoAnn Taylor of Holly Springs, Miss.; a sister, Modell Webb of Louisville; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Elva Mae Mitchell, 94, of Covington, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, James R. Mitchell, died in 1959. A son, Ray Abney Godawa, died in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Jane Godawa of Covington; sons, Ed Bustle of Independence and Donald Mitchell of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sisters, Clara Heuser of Visalia and Bessie Jones of Williamstown; 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery.
Gerald Wayne Pollitt, 59, of Melbourne, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a siding applicator for Ashcraft Siding Company, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include a daughter, Tina McDonald of Fort Thomas; a sister, Fay Wade of Silver Grove; a brother, Ralph E. Pollitt Jr. of Silver Grove; a grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Services were Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial was in the Alexandria Cemetery.
Mary Lou Williamson, 65, of Lakeview, Mich., formerly of Falmouth, died Wednesday at United Memorial Health Center, Greenville, Mich. She was an employee of Hi-Q in Lakeview.
Survivors include her husband, James Williamson; a son, Donnie Williamson of Stanton, Mich.; daughters, Sarah Beasley of Eaton County, Mich., Bonnie West and Doris Wandel, both of Lakeview, Rachel Morrow of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Cindy Humphreys of Rockford, Mich.; her mother, Sarah Corinne Cooper; brothers, Russell Cooper of Latonia and Larry Cooper of Pendleton County; a sister, Rosella Justice of Falmouth; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brigham Funeral Home, Six Lakes, Mich. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
