Benjamin Marshall, had life of hard work
Benjamin Richard "Dick" Marshall knew the value of hard work and sheer doggedness.
That's what came from growing up in the Great Depression on a Carroll County farm with nine siblings.
That's what came from slogging across North Africa and Italy during World War II, grinding away for nearly three years to reclaim all that territory from the Nazis.
That's what came from nearly a quarter century laboring on a state road crew.
Mr. Marshall, of Sanders, died Friday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. He was 82.
He worked for the Covington office of the Kentucky Highway Department from 1955 to 1978, retiring as a bridge crew foreman.
He farmed on the side on a 90-acre spread in Carroll County, raising beef cattle and tobacco. He remained active on the farm, helping to strip the tobacco crop each year, until illness including emphysema and diabetes forced him to quit about 1996, said a son, Barry Neal Marshall, also of Sanders.
His father was typical of his generation, a devoted family man who worked hard and tried to provide, Barry Marshall said.
"He was strong-minded and practical, kind of like that whole generation, " Barry Marshall said.
Mr. Marshall was a Kentucky Colonel.
