Nora Walton, 'hated to waste anything'
Growing up in the Great Depression, Nora Scalf Walton learned the value of never throwing anything away.

About 10 years ago, she filled a child's wading pool with apples that fell from the apple trees in her backyard in Latonia. Then she made more than 100 quarts of applesauce.

"She never threw anything away. She hated to waste anything, " said her son, Herb Walton of Fort Wright.

Mrs. Walton, 83, died Saturday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.

Her son still has a kerosene lamp whose light his mother used to read by when she was a child.

She told him stories about growing up in the country, making quilts for entertainment during the winter. She remained an expert seamstress all her life, he said.

She learned early the value of education. The Cumberland College graduate went on to study at Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, then earned a master's degree in religious education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville.

Feeling a call to be a teacher, she returned to Cumberland College as the dean of women and stayed for about 10 years, also teaching Bible studies and math. Then she taught math at Hughes High School in Cincinnati for about 30 years, and chaired the math department.

She also taught Sunday school for many years at Latonia Baptist Church, where she was a member.

Mrs. Walton was a serious person, her son said, a product of having a hard childhood. But she also had a wry sense of humor, and often saw the absurdity in things, he said.

Her husband, William Walton, died in 2000.
