Albert Schneider, 73, cared about people
Albert Schneider used to leave his roadside market in Alexandria unattended and stocked with fresh tomatoes, corn, peaches, cantaloupes -- and a sign that said "Take what you need and pay what you want."
"He'd leave a jar there and people always put money in it because they respected him so much, " said Schneider's daughter, Rose Class of Wilder. "They appreciated him because it gave them an old-time feeling that they could still do this as opposed to walking down the fruit aisle at Kroger's."
Mr. Schneider died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 73.
A lifelong resident of Alexandria and a member of St. Mary Parish, Mr. Schneider was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery for his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He co-owned Schneider's Orchards from the 1950s to 1980 and was a long-distance truck driver for the Duro Bag Manufacturing Co. for 25 years.
"He loved driving, " Class said. "He loved the open road and had a real appreciation for the lay of the land.
Class said her father cared about people.
"Even though he was an over-the-road truck driver and had a family of six children, Dad managed to do so many other things in the community.
"He was active in church. When we were little back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mom and Dad ran a youth center at St. Mary's Parish for kids to hang out and play.
"He helped organize a Knights of Columbus in Claryville.
"He always wanted to be involved, to make a difference."
Mr. Schneider drove a school bus for the Campbell County Schools from 1992 until he died.
"He knew everything about these kids, " Class said. "Their names, their likes and dislikes.
"I think the biggest thing about my dad was that he was engaged in life.
"People came to the hospital crying. He left a huge hole, and not just in our lives."
Mr. Schneider is survived by his wife, Mary Steffen Schneider, with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 23.
