Lora Mockbee, 102, known as 'Egg Lady'
The woman known in Newport as "the Egg Lady" has died, concluding a life that encompassed more than a century of hard times, good will and great candied apples.
Lora Mockbee, 102, of Newport, died at 9:19 a.m. Saturday at her home of cancer.
Born in Pendleton County in 1901, she moved with her family as a child to Aurora, Ind., where they farmed until moving to Newport so her father could take a job.
It was in the house at 840 Brighton St. that Miss Mockbee started selling chickens, rabbits and eggs to help make ends meet, after her father died following the Flood of 1937.
"She was known as 'The Egg Lady.' She also sold candied apples for a nickel a piece. All the neighborhood kids would come around and buy her candied apples, " said nephew Calvin Mockbee, who lived with Miss Mockbee for 19 years and who, along with his wife, Donna, and daughter, Kathy Fugate, cared for her in her last days.
Miss Mockbee came to Newport when the town's roads were still made of dirt and built up her business selling eggs.
People came from Campbell, Kenton and Boone to buy from her, her nephew said.
"She got so well-known she had to go up to Indiana to get the eggs to supply her clientele, " he said.
Retiring from selling eggs at age 62, she lived at 840 Brighton St. for 60 years, then moved to Columbia Street, where she'd lived for the last 20 years.
Early in life, she'd had the dream of becoming a history teacher, but she had to leave school to help the family of 10 get by.
On her 100th birthday, Mayor Tom Guidugli declared "Lora Mockbee Day" in Newport.
Full of faith, Miss Mockbee read at least four Bible chapters every night.
She was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church when it was on Seventh at Saratoga in Newport.
Miss Mockbee never married. Her nephew said one of her favorite sayings, when asked how she had lived to such an old age, was "I never smoked a cigarette, never took a drink of alcohol, and never got married."
Calvin Mockbee said she saw Newport grow up "from dirt streets all the way up to the jet airplanes."
"And in the 1937 flood, the flood got up to the second story of their house and they had to get a canoe and go into the window to get their furniture."
She could tell you stories about The Depression and all the presidents.
"She loved the Kennedys. She saved papers about the Kennedys, " Calvin Mockbee said.
