Henry Stark, 104, loved woodworking

Henry August Stark often entertained family and friends with his stories of growing up in Covington at the beginning of the 20th century.

He talked of his first carpentry job, which paid 60 cents an hour, a penny per minute.

In recent years, he often said with a devilish smile that he could say whatever he wanted to, because no one was left alive to say otherwise.

Mr. Stark died Saturday in the Crestview Hills home that he built. He was 104.

Since the late 1990s, he had been honored as the oldest living member of the Council of Carpenters. He carried his original membership card in his wallet and attended meetings well into his 100s.

He had a phenomenal wood shop in his basement, which he used to make tables, birdhouses and doll beds for his nieces, said one niece, Mary Hunter Ellis of Lakeside Park.

He also like to garden and at one point had hundreds of rose bushes in his backyard.

He served on the board of directors for Kentucky Federal Savings & Loan for 54 years and made real estate appraisals for it until a broken hip slowed him down two years ago.

He was ready to leave this world, Ellis said, but the many people who called him "Uncle Henry" were not ready to let him go.

"When he couldn't go down to the basement to be in his wood shop anymore, he was ready to try something else, " Ellis said.
