Charles Moore Sr., served generously
Charles O. Moore Sr. was a giving soul, both with his time and the work of his hands.
An autoworker with Ford Motor Co., he had been a resident of the old Lookout Heights neighborhood just a month before joining its volunteer police force. For nine years beginning in 1963, he balanced his home life and 40-hour work week with a few nights of police work and driving the town's ambulance, eventually becoming an assistant police chief with the Fort Wright Police when the two cities consolidated.
"He had a lot of good friends with the police, " said his wife, Norma J. Moore. "To him, it was a big family."
Mr. Moore, 76, of Fort Wright, died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. Along with his job with Ford and his police work, he was a former employee of Bluegrass Supplies and FDR Plumbing Co., a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a Navy veteran of World War II.
He left the police force in 1972 to spend more time with his family, and retired from Ford in 1991.
After retirement, Mr. Moore spent "five good years when he got to do things he really loved, " said his wife. That included woodworking. He was prolific, often making elaborate pieces only to give them away.
"He didn't charge anyone, " she said. "If they said they were looking for something, he would make it and give it to them without a second thought."
His health began to falter a few years ago, and he was diagnosed with lung cancer in March. Two weeks ago on the Moores' 55th wedding anniversary, gravely ill, he still wanted to enjoy the time he had left.
"He could barely talk, but he looked at me and said 'Where are we going for our anniversary?'" said Mrs. Moore.
