Bennie Russell, 74, butcher, sold cars
Covington drive-in moviegoers of the 1960s knew Bennie Charles Russell as "Mr. Renault of Cincinnati."
Mr. Russell, who died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas, sold Renaults for Madison Motors in Covington. He was featured in commercials advertising the French-made car that played at local drive-ins, said his daughter, Julie Utz of Butler.
Mr. Russell found many ways to make a living during his 74 years, she said, but he was most proud of his work as a butcher, a trade he practiced for more than 40 years.
He owned and ran Monarch Quality Beef in Hamilton, Ohio, for about 17 years. He also worked for Griffin Industries and Bluegrass Provisions.
After he retired from the meat business in 1976, he moved from Covington to Butler, where he drove a fuel truck for Licking Valley Oil.
When he wasn't working, the Korean War Army veteran enjoyed playing bluegrass music on the mandolin at local dances. He was a 37-year member of the Masonic Golden Rule Lodge in Covington, and a member of the Butler Baptist Church.
He also served as a Sunday school superintendent for Faith Baptist Church in Covington.
Diagnosed with cancer in 1994, he went into remission but never recovered from the chemotherapy and radiation treatments, his daughter said.
When his wife, Norma Sullivan Russell, died in 1997, "that really kicked the rug out from under him, " his daughter said. "But he found reasons to go on.
He always kept his chin up, she said, and always had a funny story to tell.
He considered it an honor that he lived to see his great-grandchildren, she said, and added that she thought his greatest fear was that they might forget him after he left this world.
But there's no chance of that, she said.
