Stanley Thomas, 53, stayed busy doing volunteer work
Stanley Paul Thomas worked for many years for the Henny Penny Corp. in Eaton, Ohio, making equipment used in fast-food restaurants.
When a back injury on the job permanently disabled him in 1988, he resolved not to "spend a lot of time sitting at home feeling sorry for himself, " said his wife, Barbara.
So the Covington resident, who died July 30 at age 53, threw himself into volunteer work.
He served as an usher, member of the Holy Name Society, bingo worker and festival worker at St. Augustine Church in Covington. Before that, he did the same thing for St. Henry Church in Erlanger.
Mr. Thomas volunteered with the American Red Cross, greeting people at the Cincinnati office. He also volunteered at St. Elizabeth Hospital South delivering supplies to various departments.
He would have found it hard to sit at home because he was extremely outgoing and loved to be around people, his wife said. That's what attracted her to him when they met, she said.
In addition to his volunteer work, in recent years Mr. Thomas helped his wife raise their grandson, Rian Derringer, who became one of the most important people in Mr. Thomas's life, his wife said.
