Arnold Brinker, opened automobile dealership

Arnold George Brinker was a businessman at an age when many people don't have time for such serious pursuits.

Mr. Brinker, 89, who died Friday at his Fort Mitchell home, played a lot of tennis while a teen-ager. His brother, the Rev. Paul Brinker of Fort Thomas, had the idea of custom-building tennis rackets.

They went into business together, and later met Joseph A. Kuchle, who designed some jigs for them to hold pieces of wood together after they were glued. Kuchle asked Mr. Brinker, who was in his early 20s, to start an auto dealership with him. Together, they started Joseph A. Kuchle & Co. on Dixie Highway in Erlanger.

When Florence Mall was being built, they moved the dealership to Florence and renamed it Airport Ford.

Mr. Brinker would have an ownership interest in the business for more than 60 years, until his death. His oldest son, Thomas, of Cincinnati, manages it now.

"He was so geared to the automobile business, that was his hobby as well as his vocation, " said Mr. Brinker's widow, Dorothy Mayleben Brinker. "He said the cars were like his children. He liked them all."

But Mr. Brinker also found time to play bridge and golf with his friends, his widow said. He also kept playing tennis well into his 70s.

He was an assertive man, a get-things-done type, but also very generous to his children and his church, his widow said. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Fort Mitchell. "I hope he sounds like the wonderful person he was, " she said.
