John William Meyer, horse carriage driver
Appropriately, John William Meyer will be taken to his final resting place in a horse-drawn hearse.
"John's whole life was horses and carriages, " said his sister, Kathryn Bitter of Edgewood.
Mr. Meyer, 49, of Covington, who made his living taking people on horse-drawn carriage rides, died Friday from injuries he suffered in a mysterious accident involving a horse and carriage nearly four weeks earlier.
He was preparing for a trip from Covington Landing on July 14 when a horse reared.
"He asked the clients to get out of the carriage and said he was going to take the horse around the corner and see if he could get things straightened out, " said Bitter.
"No one knows what happened next because there were no witnesses. His body was found two blocks up the street under the carriage. He had been drug. He suffered severe head trauma."
Mr. Meyer was treated at University of Cincinnati Hospital, where he died Friday.
He was a familiar sight in recent years at Covington Landing, where he operated a horse and carriage business. He sold the business last year, but continued to drive for the new owner.
"He was an avid animal lover, " said Bitter. "He got along better with horses than he did with people.
"He was a jovial little fellow and a fixture at Covington Landing and around town. He was quite a history buff and always told people a little Covington history when he took them around town."
