Helen Currin Jackson, generous, independent
Helen Mary Currin Jackson prided herself on her independence and self-reliance all her life, even in her later years.
"She was a very strong-willed person, " said a son, Tom Currin of Edgewood. "When she went to the grocery store, she wouldn't take a note, she had it all in her head. And she wouldn't use a walker -- she'd use the grocery cart to hold her up."
Mrs. Jackson, of Fort Wright, died Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. She was 87.
She was beset by osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis in her later years, but as a younger woman she was quite a ballroom dancer.
"That's how she met her second husband after my Dad died, " said another son, Richard Currin, of Fort Wright.
Mrs. Jackson worked nearly 20 years as clerk in the Internal Revenue Service district office in Cincinnati. She was a member of the Hilltoppers Social Club in Fort Wright and the Lookout Heights Civic Club and St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Sharonville, Ohio.
His mother was a deeply religious woman, Richard Currin said. She had taken two trips to the shrine of Fatima in Portugal.
"She was very generous, " he said. "She gave money to family and friends and to her church and other organizations."
Her first husband, Cornelius "Murph" Currin, died in 1969.
Surviving in addition to her sons are her husband, John Jackson; sisters, Ruth Dirheimer of Florence and Martha Nipper of Cincinnati; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Gertrude the Great Church, Sharonville. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Jesse Wayne Akers, 23, of Covington, died Sunday at his home.
He was a machinist with Duro Bag Co., Florence.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Tim and Toni Akers of Taylor Mill; his mother, Mollie Akers of Maineville, Ohio; a sister, Jenni Wiehe of Covington; and grandparents, Dorothy and Doug Akers of Covington and Mary Ann Thompson of Newport.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
Joshua Michael Barnett, 19, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a laborer with T&D; Masonry Construction.
Survivors include his parents, Kenneth Owen of Ryland Heights and Jennifer Barnett Kelley of Covington; a brother, Kody Addison of Covington; sisters, Amanda Robinson and Christina Robinson, both of Covington; a half-sister, Shandrell Houston of Covington; and grandparents, Russell Owens of Taylor Mill, Betty Buckler of Covington, Phillip Barnett of Pineville and Viva Hall of Covington.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burlington Cemetery. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Greg Allan Bickers, 44, of Ghent, died Monday at his home. He was a self-employed mechanic and a member of the Lighthouse Church in Owenton.
Survivors include his wife, Charma Faye Bickers; a son, Richard Allen Whitson of Carrollton; his parents, Carl Bickers of Walton and Mary Katherine Miller of Glencoe; brothers, Carl Wayne Bickers, Reggie Miller and David Miller, all of Glencoe; a sister, Vannah Miller of Glencoe; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Lighthouse, Owenton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona, is handling arrangements.
Merlen Clutterbuck, 82, of Columbia, formerly of Independence, died at 11:47 a.m. Monday at Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia.
She was a homemaker and a member of Banklick Christian Church, Independence.
She attended Trinity United Methodist Church, Columbia.
Survivors include her husband, John R. Clutterbuck; a son, Robert C. Clutterbuck of Columbia; brothers, James Cason of Erlanger and Robert Gene Cason of Florence; two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, Columbia. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. today. Burial will be in Haven Hill Cemetery, Columbia.
Aubrey Lynn Gribble, 22 months, the daughter of Robert Lawrence Gribble and Julia Machelle Starnes of Crittenden, died Monday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include a sister, Courtney Gribble of Crittenden; grandparents, Bob and Darlene Gribble of Crittenden, Eddie and Alice Starnes Jr. of Florence and Hester Eldridge of Crittenden; and great-grandparents, Russell Gribble of Florida, Buck Combs Sr. of Petersburg and Ruth Starnes of Verona.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Aubrey Gribble Fund, in care of any Fifth Third Bank.
Mary Ruth Marquette, 68, of Lexington, formerly of Falmouth, died Tuesday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.

Donald Robinson, 69, of Maysville, died at 10:56 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington.
He was a retired employee of Bartlett Milling Co., a former employee of the Coca-Cola Co., a member of St. Patrick Church and DeKalb Lodge in Maysville, and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Moran Robinson; a son, Greg Robinson of Steubenville, Ohio; daughters, Tammy Robinson and Lisa Fierros, both of Statesville, N.C.; three brothers, a sister and four grandchildren.
