Catherine Perry's life filled with humor, roses
In the heart of Latonia, her Irish wit, ready smile and the fragrant rosebushes that she saved from the old Decoursey racetrack kept family coming round to see a beloved aunt and sister.
Catherine C. Perry, 80, of Latonia, died at 4:35 p.m. Friday at her home from complications of cancer.
She was a retired supervisor with the Internal Revenue Service and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia.
She was an avid volunteer, particularly with Holy Cross Church and Parish Kitchen, Covington.
She did everything for Holy Cross from stuff envelopes to work in the kitchen, said niece Patty Voirol of Villa Hills.
"She loved her roses in her yard. They were from the old Decoursey racetrack. They were so fragrant. When they closed the old Latonia racetrack down, the guy who kept the grounds over there brought them over and planted them."
Miss Perry had a ready smile and an great Irish sense of humor, Voirol said.
"She had a great sense of humor -- pretty quick with the tongue. She was really proud of her Irish heritage."
Miss Perry made one trip to Ireland about 20 years ago and visited all of her cousins, Voirol said.
Miss Perry remained dedicated to her family and friends, celebrating her many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews and picking up friends for hair and doctor appointments, Voirol said.
Other survivors include a sister, Sister Mary Margaret, O.P., of Newark, N.J.; a brother, James Richard Perry of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; 11 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
A brother, John B. Perry; and a sister, Alice Rose Niemer, preceded her in death.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Cross Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Memorials are suggested to Monastery of St. Dominic, 375 13th Ave., Newark, N.J. 07103.
Wayne Arrasmith, 98, of Union, died Sunday at Ivy Wood Health Care Center in Cincinnati. Arrangements are pending at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence.
Florence Crusie, 83, of Highland Heights, died Friday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a retired employee of the Mack Shirt Co., Cincinnati. Her husband, Larry Crusie, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Mooneyham of Morrow, Ohio; a son, William Cummins of Highland Heights; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Lenoxburg Cemetery, Bracken County.
Alice Eilers, 85, of Covington, died at 5:53 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Augustine Church, Covington, and the church's St. Monica Society. Her husband, Ralph W. Eilers Sr., died in 1986.
Survivors include sons, Ralph W. Bill Eilers Jr. of Richmond, Bob Eilers of Dry Ridge and Don Eilers of Independence; a brother, Lonnie Dicken of San Diego; a sister, Gertrude Tayce of Erlanger; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Tuesday at St. Augustine Church. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Augustine Church, 1839 Euclid Ave., Covington, Ky. 41014. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Elizabeth E. Goodwin, 87, of Fort Thomas, died Saturday at her home. She was a cashier and giftwrapper with Lazarus Department Store, Cincinnati, and a member of Dayton Interfaith Group and the Altar Guild and Women's Fellowship with Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Bellevue. A stepdaughter, Edith Clinkenbeard, and stepsons, Jack K. Goodwin and Paul D. Goodwin, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Goodwin of Fort Thomas; a stepson, Bill L. Goodwin of Lebanon, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Geneva Agnes Tarr Hopkins, 76, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. She was a retired 3M Co. employee. A son, Ricky Allen Hedges, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Odell Hopkins; a son, Phil Hedges of Richmond; a daughter, Nancy Bailey of Georgetown; a sister, Virginia Mae Henderson; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
John S. Lewis, 58, of Warsaw, died Saturday at his home. He was owner of Lewis Construction Co. and Classic Homes, Warsaw, a past master of Ghent Masonic Lodge and a member of United Methodist Church, Carrollton.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Garnett Lewis; sons, Adam Lewis of Jeffersonville, Ind., and Jeremy Lewis of Ghent; a stepson, Tim Glore of Warsaw; his parents, Billy Smith of Lewis and Millie Pasley Lewis, both of Warsaw; and four grandchildren.

James Samuel Lusby Jr., 88, of New Liberty, died Saturday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. He was farmer and an employee of Carrollton Tobacco Market, the Northern Kentucky Production Credit Association and Growers Tobacco Warehouse. He was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church, where he was a chairman of the deacons, a trustee, treasurer and moderator. He was a member of the Owen County Historical Society and a past director of the county hospital, fair, Southern States and historical society boards.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Craigmyle Lusby; a son, Harold Lusby of Bay City, Texas; and two granddaughters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McDonald & New Funeral Home, Seminary Street location, Owenton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. James E. Mershon, 80, of Independence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Edgewood. He was a retired assembler with K.D. Lamp Co. and a member of First Baptist Church, Independence.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice England Mershon; daughters, Marrilyn Hamilton and Judy Mershon, both of Independence; a son, Eddie Mershon of Grayson; a foster daughter, Brenda Morgan of Covington; sisters, Dorothy Philpot and Lucille Runion, both of Cincinnati; a brother, Clarence Mershon of Danville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Olga Welte, 77, of Augusta, died Saturday at Augusta Health Care Center. She was a former nurse and homemaker, and a member of St. Augustine Church, Augusta. She was a member of Triple Ridge Homemakers Club and a founding member of Bracken County Quilting Club.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Welte, and a daughter, Rose Marie Welte of Maysville.

Virgil Williams, 72, of Southgate, died at 3:59 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a quality control worker with Powell Valve Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Middletown, Ohio, Eagles Aerie No. 528. His first wife, Gladys S. Williams, died in 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Faye W. Williams; a stepson, Michael D. Stewart of Beavercreek, Ohio; sisters, Eunice Franz, Francis Montjoy, both of Cincinnati, Bertie Salley of Fairfield, Ohio, and Betty Oliver of Campton; two step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
