Lonny Browning's zest focused on education
Lonny Gayle Browning was a teacher, school board chairman, tobacco farmer and church elder with a pleasing personality and principled character.
"He stood for what was good and right and uplifting. He was impeccably honest, " said former Pendleton County School Superintendent Owen Collins.
"He was friendly and outgoing, with a half-chuckle, half-laugh that was infectious and endearing to people."
Mr. Browning, 65, of Falmouth, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a teacher for 30 years, most of the time at Grant's Lick School in Campbell County.
Mr. Browning was president of the Pendleton County Retired Teachers and Northern Kentucky District of Retired Teachers.
He was former chairman of the Pendleton County School Board and an elder of Oakland Christian Church in Pendleton County. He also was the choir director and a Sunday school teacher at the church, and was secretary of the Oakland cemetery Board.
"He was very influential in the church and was extremely conscientious about his duties on the school board, " said Collins. "He was a great supporter of schools.
"One of his special qualities was his hospitality. He enjoyed having company at his home, and he made you feel welcome and comfortable. He liked for you to loosen your tie, slip off your shoes and enjoy yourself."
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Browning; sons, Will Clayton Browning and Paul Stuart Browning, both of Falmouth; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakland Christian Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in Oakland cemetery in Pendleton County.

Catherine M. Kennedy Bain, 96, of Erlanger, died at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was an employee of St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington, a member of Erlanger Lions Club and a volunteer with St. Henry Church in Elsmere and Dixie Heights High School. She was a member of the Grandmothers Club and Erlanger-Elsmere Senior Citizens. Her husband, Walter G. Bain, died in 1974.
Survivors include a daughter, Carole Erpenbeck of Edgewood; a son, John J. Bain of Edgewood; a brother, Tom Kennedy of Fort Mitchell; sisters, Ruth Kennedy and Mary Kreutzkamp, both of Fort Mitchell; eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. A reception in the church hall will follow services. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Robert A. Closson, 51, of Florence, died Aug. 12 at his home. He was an operation support analyst with Great American Insurance Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his mother, Frances Swope Closson of Springfield, Ohio; a sister, Barbara Hedge of Springfield; and brothers, Edward Closson and Michael Closson, both of Springfield.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Conroy Funeral Home, Springfield.
Kendrick "Kenny Bear" Geldrich, son of Dean Allen and Rachel Christine Geldrich of Loveland, Ohio, was stillborn Tuesday at Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include grandparents, Joanna Geldrich of Middletown, Ohio, and Richard Franzen of Fort Thomas; and great-grandparents, Marian P. and Richard A. Franzen of Cincinnati.

Hazel Pearl Groh, 83, of Alexandria, died at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a retired waitress with Ted Kluzewski's Steak House, Cincinnati. Her husband, Jacob Groh, died in 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Diane Bertke of Alexandria; a sister, Lula McKenzie of Ludlow; brothers, Basil McDavid of Burlington and Kyle McDavid of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchildren.

Theodore R. Jump, 81, of Columbus, Ind., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Wednesday at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was a retired employee of L&N; Railroad, a member of Latonia Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include Zelma Osborne Jump; a son, Rondal W. Jump of Columbus; a daughter, Carol Shemwell of Louisville; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home, Columbus. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Evelyn Martha McElfresh, 87, of Erlanger, died Monday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker and a member of Erlanger Baptist Church. Her husband, Charles A. McElfresh Sr., died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters, Erlene Tate Barndt of Florence, June Wainscott of Indiana, Lynda Anderson of Edgewood, Marita Spencer of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Sherri Shafer of Plantation, Fla., and Kimberly Mullins of Villa Hills; sons, Tony McElfresh of Florence, Roger McElfresh of Covington, Mack McElfresh and Danny McElfresh, both of Independence, and David McElfresh of Dry Ridge; a sister, Lucille Playforth of Florence; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary Elizabeth Skinner McNay, 86, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Williamstown, died Sunday at her home. She was a retired secretary with a retail carpet store and a member of Living Hope Community Church in Ocala. Her first husband, Louis E. Wilson, died in 1973.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond L. McNay; sons, Horace E. "Jerry" Wilson of Loveland, Ohio, and Terry L. Wilson of Dayton, Ohio; sisters, Verna Lou Wise of Mason, Ohio, and Alta Rae Bellamy of Shreveport, La.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Roberts Funeral Home, Ocala. Burial will be in Veterans Cemetery, Ocala.
Robert "Bobb" Messingschlager, 68, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Aug. 3 in Fort Lauderale. He was owner of Bobb's Piano and Organ stores in Florida and a former employee of Baldwin Piano Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Popp Messingschlager; sons, Michael Messingschlager of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Mark Messingschlager of Fort Lauderdale; a daughter, Michelle Messingschlager of Delray Beach, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial was Aug. 7 at St. Anthony Church, Fort Lauderdale. Burial was in Lauderdale Memorial Park, Fort Lauderdale. Grover Cleveland Murrell Jr., 78, of Erlanger, died Monday at Village Care Center, Erlanger. He was a former bond redemption worker with the U.S. Treasury Department, a member of Anchor Church in Erlanger and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include sisters, Martha Wimpey and Louise Brooks, both of Cincinnati.

Isaiah Christian Lovitt Napier, 15 months, sons of Mary Lovitt and Chris Napier, both of Independence, died at 11:32 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Other survivors include brothers, Carlos Lovitt of Elsmere and Christopher Napier of Independence; grandparents, Carl and Peggy Lovitt of Verona and Glen and Loretta Napier of Latonia; and great-grandparents, Mary Hamacher of Florence and Mable Barnett of Latonia.

Mildred Shipp, 89, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a teacher with the Grant County Board of Education and a member of Williamstown Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Nite Owls Homemakers, Williamstown Women's Club and Carlsbad Garden Club. She was a former chairwoman of the annual flower show at the Grant County Fair and a judge with the annual Merigold Festival. She was president of the Mental Health Retardation Association and a recipient of the Kentucky Human Service Volunteer of the Year award with the Williamstown Women's Club.
Survivors include daughters, Laura Thomson of Independence and Mary R. Sebree of Williamstown; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery. Khalil Alexander Sizemore, 2 months, of Taylor Mill, son of Stephen Paul Sizemore of Cincinnati and Nadaqua Tinu Borode of Taylor Mill, died Tuesday at his home.
Other survivors include grandparents, Theresa A. Borode of Taylor Mill, Bob Sizemore of Ross, Ohio, and Vivian Kirk of Bright, Ind.; and great-grandparents, Jim and Betty Dooley of West Harrison, Ohio, and Virgil Perry of Crescent Springs.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Catherine M. Webb, 88, of Highland Heights, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights. She was a retired kitchen worker with the Beverly Hills Supper Club, Southgate. Her husband, James Webb, died in 1989. A daughter, Esther Lipscomb, died in 1990. There are no immediate survivors.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.
Clyde Earnest Wells, 66, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired truck driver with Grant County Foods, Dry Ridge, and a member of St. Williams Church, Williamstown. His wife, Patricia Ann Wells, died in 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia Hisle Wells; sons, Kevin Ray Wells of Williamstown and Jerry Patrick Wells of Corinth; stepsons, Douglas Allen Hunt of Crittenden, Craig Hunt of Burlington and Bryan Hunt of Paris; daughters, Diana Lynn Smith of Jonesville, Nancy Ann Roberts of Lake Orion, Mich., Michelle Wilson of Falmouth and Donna Sue Coffman of Dry Ridge; brothers, Donald Ray Wells of Williamstown and Everett Eugene Wells of Walton; a sister, Dorothy Lee Kohake of Edgewood; 16 grandchildren and a step-grandchild.
