'Herb' Ellington, businessman, UK basketball fan
Herbert W. "Herb" Ellington always ended phone calls to his children with the words, "I love you."
The Edgewood resident was a wonderful father to his children and stepchildren, said his widow, Anne Griebeling Ford Ellington.
"He was always very supportive of his children, " she said. "A sudden death like that, it breaks all of our hearts."
Mr. Ellington died Sunday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati from complications following knee surgery. He was 73.
He grew up in a coal company town in the Hazard area, where his father worked as a supervisor in a mine. Mr. Ellington worked in the mines during the summer and for a while after he graduated from high school.
He had been a standout basketball player at Vicco High School in Jeff, Ky.
After he had two serious accidents in the mine, including ramming a spike through his foot, his father told him he couldn't keep him on if he was going to be so careless, his widow said.
That turned out to be a good thing. Mr. Ellington joined the Navy, and served on an aircraft carrier during the Korean War, making sure planes were balanced before takeoff.
He went to the University of Kentucky on the GI Bill and graduated in 1956. He retained a lifelong love for UK basketball. "He would not miss a game, " his widow said, even if he could only watch it on TV.
Mr. Ellington made a career of the insurance business. He settled in Louisville, where he worked as a regional director for a life insurance company.
After he married
Mrs. Ellington in 1985, he moved to Northern Kentucky, where she has owned and operated the Flower Basket florist in Ludlow for 27 years. Mr. Ellington started his own business, Ellington and Associates Insurance Agency in Florence. He was very dedicated to his customers, Mrs. Ellington said.
He was a talkative man who never met a stranger, but he also was mechanically inclined. "He had a very rational mind that would pick things apart and try to make them better, " his widow said.
