Col. Robert J. Stevie, World War II agent
Col. Robert J. Stevie had a different perspective on life, said his son, Robert W. Stevie, of White Oak, Ohio.
That could explain his work during World War II as a counter intelligence agent, ferreting out Germans who had tried to pass themselves off as American soldiers, and his task after the war tracking down thousands of lesser functionaries of the Nazi regime sought by the Allies.
That could explain his returning to school in middle age to get a master's degree in education from Xavier University, and using it to launch yet another career as a teacher and a counselor in schools in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
That could explain his sons' answer to the question of just exactly when did their father retire for good.
"I'm not sure that he ever did, " Robert Stevie said.
Col. Stevie, of Fort Thomas died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was 90.
Col. Stevie was chosen for Army counter intelligence because he was "passable" in speaking German -- he had studied the language at St. Stephen High School in Newport -- and because he could type.
"That was rare for a man in the 1940s, " Robert Stevie said.
His Army tour of duty began a long career in federal service. He spent most of that as a manager and analyst for the Army Department of Procurement, but also worked for the IRS.
He also joined the Army Reserve and rose to the rank of colonel.
After retiring from federal service, he was a guidance counselor at St. Catharine Church in Cincinnati's Westwood neighborhood and taught math, physics and chemistry at Holy Cross High School in Latonia. He aided in teaching the science courses by virtue of degree in chemical engineering he earned in the 1950s from the University of Cincinnati.
He was a member of the St. Vincent Depaul Society, past president of the local chapter of the National Association of Federal Employees and a past commissioner of the Dan Beard Council Boy Scouts of America.
Robert Stevie said his father was a passionate believer in the value of education. "He was always pushing us to learn as much as we could, " Robert Stevie said.
His words sunk in. All three of his sons earned graduate degrees and went on to successful careers.
Col. Stevie's determination to live life to its fullest extended to his last few hours, said his son. "He died on his 90th birthday, " Robert Stevie said. "We kept wondering why he was holding on and holding, and then we realized he was trying to last past the time when he was born."
Col. Stevie made it -- even going an extra hour to compensate for Daylight Savings Time.
"That was just like him, " his son said.
Col. Stevie's wife, Freda Rose Luther Stevie, preceded him in death.
Survivors in addition to his son include two other sons, Frederick Stevie of Cary, N.C., and Richard G. Stevie of Delhi Township, Ohio; a brother, Dr. John R. Stevie of Fort Wright; and six grandchildren.
