Aloysius B. Van Hagen, 73, labor union official
Aloysius B. Van Hagen was a dedicated labor union official who once spent 10 days in jail for leading Cincinnati city employees on a strike.
He worked 30 years for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in Cincinnati and spent the last 20 years as director of the district that handled union business in Northern Kentucky and Southern Ohio. He retired 11 years ago.
Mr. Van Hagen, 73, of Villa Hills, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
Mr. Van Hagen negotiated contracts for non-uniformed government workers and directed numerous other union activities.
In January and February of 1970, he led a 34-day strike by 1, 500 city of Cincinnati workers over a contract dispute that delayed, among other projects, the completion of Riverfront Stadium.
He was found in contempt of court for violating a court injunction that restricted picketing and was ordered to spend 20 days in the old Cincinnati Workhouse.
"I spent 18 months in Korea during the war, so I think I can stand it, " he said while in jail.
Union members refused to negotiate or go back to work while Mr. Van Hagen was in jail. After 10 days in jail, Mr. Van Hagen was released on bond and helped negotiate an end to the strike.
"He was very dedicated to his career, " said Mr. Van Hagen's wife of 52 years, Virginia Leopold Van Hagen. "He was very much for a fair wage for your work.
"He was very instrumental in public employees getting pay raises. He also was especially interested in helping employees get other benefits."
Mr. Van Hagen referred to himself as a "professional negotiator."
"Negotiations are a taxing experience, " he said in 1976. "You think about it all the time.
"I'll wake up in the middle of the night with an idea about how to work things out. Even though you're sleeping, you're still thinking."
Mr. Van Hagen put himself through night school at Villa Madonna College, now Thomas More College, by driving a Weidemann beer truck. He graduated with a business degree in 1960 and went to work the next year with AFSCME.
"He was a very generous and very gracious person, " said Mrs. Van Hagen. "He helped out on United Way. He always opened his home to people."
As a youngster he played basketball, baseball and softball and, as an adult, his favorite activity was golf.
Mr. Van Hagen was a member of St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs, belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a member of Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 in Covington.
