Harold Jetter, artist decorated churches

Harold Griffith Jetter Sr., an artist who with his father and brother decorated hundreds of churches in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia, died Monday at his home in Erlanger. He was 89.

In the more than 50 years that Jetter and Jetter Church Decorators operated before Mr. Jetter retired about 20 years ago, the company was much in demand for painting baptismal murals, refurbishing gold leaf, refinishing pews and other church projects.

"I'd estimate they worked on 400 to 500 churches, " said a son, Harold G. Jetter Jr. of Richwood. "After awhile, some were repeat performances."

Mr. Griffith trained at the Cincinnati Art Academy and also learned from his father, who had studied under noted Covington painter Frank Duveneck.

Mr. Jetter also was a noted oil painter, particularly of portraits. His work hangs in the presidential libraries of Jimmy Carter in Atlanta and Ronald Reagan in Simi Valley, Calif.

"All of his children and grandchildren have paintings in their homes that he did, " said Harold Jetter Jr.'s wife, Catherine.

Her father-in-law was the strongest man -- emotionally as well as physically -- that she ever knew, she said.

"He could be on a roof better than any young man, " she said. "We'd all be holding our breath and it was nothing to him."

His father was a devoted family man, Harold Jetter Jr. said.

"If I was half the man he was, I'd be a happy guy, good at everything and to everyone, " he said.

Mr. Jetter was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia.

Surviving in addition to his son are his wife, Ester Granneman Jetter; a daughter, Sheryl Silcox, of Erlanger; another son, David A. Getter of Springdale, Ohio; a brother, William Jetter, of Edgewood; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
