Thomas Appelman, 68, former Augusta mayor
Thomas Leo Appelman Sr. loved being mayor of Augusta, a post he held for 16 years.
He also loved to talk politics, and he did so with anyone and everyone, said his daughter, Vicki Wenz of Mount Sterling.
"He didn't see a stranger as far as talking to people was concerned, " she said.
Mr. Appelman, 68, of Augusta, who died Tuesday at the Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, served for two years on the August city council, then was elected mayor in 1970.
During his tenure, the city built the Bracken Creek Apartments, Mary Ingles Manor, a new firehouse, maintenance department, ball field, swimming pool, park and sewer treatment plant.
He also helped reestablish ferry service and get Riverside Drive on the National Register of Historic Places. The television miniseries "Centennial" and the movies "Huckleberry Finn" and "Lost in Yonkers" were filmed in Augusta when he was mayor.
"His years as mayor were real progressive for the city, " said Clark Hennessey, a good friend and his funeral director. "He accomplished some things that have really put the city where we are now."
Mr. Appelman was one of the original members of the work force of Clopay, a local plastics manufacturer. He worked for the company for 42 years, advancing from machine operator to plant manager.
He belonged to many civic and community groups, including the Buffalo Trace Area Development District board of directors, the Augusta Rotary Club, St. James Church of Minerva, St. Augustine Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Bracken County Historical Society.
He chaired a citizens group that promoted the AA highway and was a past master commissioner of Bracken County.
Survivors include his wife, Betty H. Appelman; daughters, Lisa Schmiedl of Cincinnati, Vicki Wenz of Mount Sterling, Carrie Jefferson of Augusta, Connie Appelman of Lexington, Emily Appelman of Dry Ridge; sons, Thomas Appelman, Jr. of Chattanooga, Tenn., Steve Appelman of Maysville and Pat Appelman of Elizabethtown; sisters, Betty Cummins, Marilyn Pollard, Kitty Riggs, Sue Cummins, Marti Wood; a brother, Jim Appelman; and 13 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Church, Augusta. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.
Ronald P. Fogt, 68, of Edgewood, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
A retired director of distribution with Gibson Greeting Cards Co., he was a Korean War veteran and a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Lakeside Park.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Riggleman Fogt; daughters, April Thomas of Edgewood and June Green of Erlanger; sons, Brent A. Fogt of Erlanger and Christian P. Fogt of Covington; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Lydia E. "Betty" Risen Gard, 92, of Pittsboro, N.C., died Monday.
She was a retired teacher for Fairfax County Schools in Virginia and member of Agape Christian Church in Chapel Hill, N.C., and Wilson Boulevard Christian Church, Arlington, Va. Her husband, Dr. Paul Dombey Gard, and son, Oliver William Gard, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Dr. Paul D. Gard of Grenada, Miss., and Dr. James R. Gard of Pittsboro; daughters, Dr. Kath-erine Kowal of Cincinnati, Susan Kolesar of Ellicott City, Md., and Dr. Mary Haliz of Jedda, Saudi Arabia; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.
Timothy James Gindele, 45, of Edgewood, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a stage technician for the Cincinnati Stage Employees Union Local No. 5 and a member of its executive board.
Survivors include a daughter, Allison Gindele of Edgewood; a son, Adam Gindele of Edgewood; and brothers, David Gindele of Union and Paul Gindele of Cincinnati.

Dorothy G. Jacobs, 78, of Cincinnati, formerly of Gallatin County, died Monday. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Warsaw. Her husband, Fred Thomas Jacobs, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Cruse of Little Rock, Ark.; a sister, Charlene Wulfekamp of Cincinnati; brothers, Bobby Gilbert of Seattle and Clarence Gilbert of Oklahoma City; and a granddaughter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Warsaw. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Warsaw.
Matilda Marcella Tieman Lang, 90, of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
She worked at St. Elizabeth Medical Centers and Booth Hospital and at Gibson Greeting Card Co. She also was a member of St. Pius X Church, Edgewood.
Survivors include a son, Robert Lang of Edgewood; four grandchildren and eight great-grand-children.

Patricia E. Macke, 85, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.

Charles W. Renaker, 84, of Florence, died Saturday at Woodspoint Health Care Center, Florence.
He was a truck driver for Kahn's and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Renaker of Florence; and a son, Steven Renaker of Fort Wright.
No services are planned. Mr. Renaker bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.
Mae Stephens Shipp, 98, of Dry Ridge, died Monday.
She was a member of Dry Ridge Christian Church and the Capt. John Lillard Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution. Her husband, John Shipp, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Dr. Darl B. Shipp and Kline Shipp, both of Dry Ridge; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dry Ridge Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

William Charles Thornton, 58, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He was a cargo supervisor with American Airlines, a member of Fellowship of Believers Church in Florence and the Harley Owners Group, and a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include daughters, Amber Rouse of Dry Ridge and Charlsea Thornton of Walton; his parents, Vernon Denson Thornton of Soldotna, Alaska, and Gladys Irene Robinson of Florence; a sister, Sandy Louden of Burlington; a brother, Jack Robinson of Elsmere; and a grandchild.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Nora Updike, 87, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a member of Mount Olivet Church of Christ, Williamstown. Her husband, Ben Butler Updike, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Marvin J. Updike of Dry Ridge; brothers, Omar Blackburn of Crittenden, Lyman Blackburn of Union and Elza F. Blackburn of Covington; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

James E. Wagner Sr., 85, of Glencoe, died Saturday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw.
He was a retired machinist and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his son, James Wagner Jr. of Glencoe and three grandchildren.
Services are at the convenience of the family. Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw, is handling arrangements.
Charles F. Westrick, 72, of Milton, died Monday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. He was a retired employee of U.S. Shoe Corp., Vevay, Ind., a member of St. John Church in Carrollton and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Furnish Westrick; sons, Charles David Westrick of Dallas and Troy Steven Westrick of Louisville; sisters, Nancy Baker of Sligo and Thelma Aldridge and Esther Morgan, both of Carrollton; brothers, Louis Westrick and Edward Westrick, both of Carrollton, and Stanley Westrick of Parachute, Colo.
