Maude M. Bowling, 78, school teacher
Maude M. Bowling dedicated her life to doing small things that make a big difference.
"If there was a kid at school with no jacket for winter, she'd just buy one, " said grandson Darrin McMillen, of Park Hills.
Mrs. Bowling of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood. She was 78.
She spent nearly 30 years as an elementary school teacher in Kenton County, 21 of those years at Ryland Heights Elementary.
"She taught because she valued education and saw a chance to take care of kids, " McMillen said. "Some of the kids she was closest to came from the toughest backgrounds."
McMillen said he remembered being with his grandmother when former students, now grown, approached her "with gratitude -- almost reverence -- for the things she had done for them."
Her granddaughter, Stephanie Beutel of Florence, said growing up poor in rural Clay County might have softened Mrs. Bowling's heart for those who'd had a hard time. Her grandmother used to tell about how excited she'd get when her mother would hand-sew one new dress for her for each new school year.
"She grew up in a family with a lot of love but not much money, " Beutel said.
Mrs. Bowling was the first to make food if there was a death in a family, McMillen said, and she took care of him with meals and laundry when he was in college and far from home.
"I'm going on 30 now, and she would still call me a couple times a week just to see how I was, " McMillen said.
Mrs. Bowling was a deeply religious woman, almost from birth, her grandson said, and she was just living her life according to her religious convictions.
"She did so many little things every day (to help people), but never with any grandeur, " McMillen said. "She was awfully humble all the time."
Mrs. Bowling was a member of the Kentucky Education Association.
