Dr. Beda P. Alvarez, loved his large family
With eight children and nine grandchildren, the Anderson Township home of Dr. Beda P. Alvarez bustled with activity and noise every weekend. He wouldn't have it any other way.
The eldest of eight children who grew up in the Philippines, Dr. Alvarez took great pride in his own large family. Every weekend, the grandchildren came over for sleepovers. Every summer, he hosted huge parties for family and friends just to show his love for them.
"He loved having everyone close, " said his wife of 41 years, Terry E. Espedido Alvarez. "When we get everyone together, it's a pretty big gathering. My husband loved it. He really loved it."
Dr. Alvarez, 67, of Anderson Township, died Thursday. After first practicing general medicine in Covington, he had a private practice in Ludlow, Ky., for many years.
He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy 12 years ago, and had a heart transplant in 1998. There were complications, which led to a six-month hospital stay. Recognizing his gregarious nature, doctors permitted visits from all of his family during his recovery.
"They knew it would help him, to be able to be around them, and it did, " said Mrs. Alvarez.
Since then, Dr. Alvarez practiced medicine part-time until his passing Thursday, one day shy of the fifth anniversary of his transplant. He was also active in the Filipino Association of Southern Ohio, which promotes Filipino culture.
Along with his wife, he is survived by sons, Dr. Beda Alvarez Jr., Dr. Wade Alvarez, Dr. Brian Alvarez, Randy Alvarez, Brandon Alvarez and Bradley Alvarez; daughters, Tracy Alvarez and Shirline Miller; sisters, Dr. Nina Baluyot and Suzy Hussey; a brother, Alex Alvarez; and nine grandchildren.
