Harry E. Haake, 81, known for his kindness
Harry E. Haake played Santa Claus, served as deputy sheriff and jailer in Kenton County, negotiated contracts for United Auto Workers Local 863, and he headed the local Democratic party for nearly a decade. But what his only child remembers most is that other people appreciated her father's kindness.
"When I was a little kid ... people would stop him on the street and thank him for helping them. It amazed me how many people really appreciated him for the things that he had done, " said his daughter, Charlene Streutker of Florence.
Mr. Haake, of Taylor Mill, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice in Covington. He was 81.
Mr. Haake played Santa Claus during parties that his United Auto Workers local held for underprivileged children, as well as for friends and children in his church, Latonia Christian Church.
In the 1970s, he was also chairman of Kenton County Democrats for two 4-year terms. Streutker's husband, Alen, said he could appreciate his father-in-law's practical approach to that work.
"He promoted the political scene from the common man's position -- not the grand wheelings and dealings, but the kind of stuff that gets things done, " he said.
