Paul Marshall Gross, owned horse transport service
Paul Marshall Gross was a selfless, unique and friendly man who loved horses and worked with them most of his life, said members of his family.
Mr. Gross died Thursday at his home in Walton.
He was 84.
His daughter, Pauline Gross Flynn, of Walton said he had a distinctive character.
"After God made him, he threw the pattern away, " she said.
While operating his own horse transport service, Mr. Gross frequently had expensive racehorses under his care.
One of his clients was Steve Cauthen, the Boone County resident who won the Triple Crown in 1978.
Mr. Gross also managed various horse farms, including the T.C. Melrose farm in Union and the Jimmy Brinks farm in Richwood.
"He liked horses. He didn't bet on 'em, but he liked to be around horses, " said his wife, Martha Durr Gross.
Mr. Gross was also a railroad worker at Union Terminal until retiring in the early 1980s, and he was a member of the Railway Clerks Union.
He had served as a deacon at Walton Christian Church until he switched his church membership to First Church of Christ in Burlington.
While he worked hard for everything he had in life, Mr. Gross was also generous to others, Flynn said.
"He thought of everybody else instead of himself, " she said.
Besides his wife and daughter, survivors include two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.

Maurice "Mossey" H. Byrne Jr., 85, of Newport, died Monday at Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.
He was a retired employee of Cincinnati Milacron, and a former artist with MATCO and meat cutter with Fipps.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Church in Newport, the church Holy Name Society and Starliters group, Catholic War Vets and the Catholic Theater Guild.
He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Meister Byrne; daughters, Eileen Byrne of Covington, Rebecca Giles of Independence and Maureen Wash of Highland Heights; a son, Kevin Byrne of Union; and 10 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

June V. Dyas, 64, of Newport, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a packer with J. Charles Glass Works, Erlanger.
Survivors include her husband, Wallace A. Dyas; a daughter, Deborah Coldiron of Newport; sisters, Rosalie Mickelson of Reno, Nev., and Evelyn, of Barbourville, W.Va.; and a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Gary Mitchell Hester, 56, of Dry Ridge, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.
He was disabled, and was a member of Florence Methodist Church.
Survivors include a half-sister, Mary Ann Flynn of Florence.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Florence Cemetery.
Marvin Murray, 77, of Glencoe, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a brake operator with Mar-Mat Manufacturing Co. and a member of Salem Baptist Church, Walton.
His wife, Mabel Marie Adams Murray, died June 26.
Survivors include a son, Bennie F. Adams of Glencoe, two sisters, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.
Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona.
