Scott Kellis, fire dept. president
Scott "Scotty" Kellis loved the city of Dayton -- enough to put in 20 years as the unpaid president of the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department.
"He never received a dime for 20 years, and loved every minute of it, " said his daughter, Gale Halsey, of Fort Thomas.
Mr. Kellis, of Fort Thomas, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was 74.
As president of the fire department, Mr. Kellis' responsibilities included purchasing ambulances, fire trucks and property for expanding the department, Halsey said.
On one occasion, when the department didn't have the money for a new building, Mr. Kellis and his wife, Norma Jean, put the money down themselves.
"My parents went ahead and bought the property, and held onto it until the city approved the funds, " Halsey said.
Mr. Kellis was a retired supervisor at Interlake Steel in Wilder and a Korean War veteran of the Navy.
His granddaughter, Shawna Kellis, of College Hill, Cincinnati, said she was going to miss him.
