James Rohling, 62, Covington firefighter
Covington lost one its most devoted and longest-serving firefighters Saturday morning when James "Jim" D. Rohling died at his home in Morning View after a long illness. He was 62.
Rohling, a retired assistant chief of the Covington Fire Department, served as a firefighter and emergency management expert for 25 years.
"He was a good man, " said former Covington Fire Chief Denny Mussman. "After I made chief, I promoted him to assistant. He was my right-hand man. There's nothing that you could ask of him that he wouldn't accomplish it."
Mussman said his tenure with the fire department was identical to Rohling's. Both men started in Covington in June of 1971 and retired in August 1996.
Mussman said he and Rohling were close co-workers.
"We were good friends, " Mussman said. "After you retire, you don't see each other anymore, but on the job, we were very good friends."
Mussman said Rohling was a training officer and equipment manager for the Covington department.
He said Rohling was crucial in training Covington firefighters in the 1980s and '90s when the job expanded from just fighting fires to a more multi-task role that included providing emergency medical care and handling hazardous materials.
Mussman said Rohling was probably closer to more of his fellow firefighters than anyone else in the department.
"If you made Jim mad, you had to try, " Mussman said.
In addition to enjoying cooking for his co-workers at the firehouse, Mussman said he would also remember the large-set Rohling for his love of Mexican food.
"We'd always slip out at noon and get Mexican somewhere, " Mussman said, laughing. "In general, he was just a nice person. We did have a lot of fun."
Rohling was a member of St. Cecilia Church in Independence, Ducks Unlimited and the Kentucky Firefighters Association. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.
He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
