Larry M. Jones, 54, former police chief
Former Fort Mitchell Police Chief Larry Michael Jones, Sr., spent his life serving and guiding others -- as a chaplain in Vietnam and as a police officer -- but nothing was more important to him than family.
"Larry was a role model for the community, for young men and women and certainly as a parent, " his wife of nearly 35 years, Judy Davenport Jones, said.
Mr. Jones died Saturday at his home in Florence. He was 54.
He was a Fort Mitchell police officer for six years, police chief for nine years, worked with the D.A.R.E. anti-drug program and developed the Fort Mitchell Police Explorers Program to introduce young men and women to careers in law enforcement.
His daughter, Kimberly DeMoisey of Burlington, said her husband, Jared, now working in the Boone County Sheriff's department, went through her father's program.
Helping young people in the community was something DeMoisey said she remembers her father always doing.
"Even growing up in church, when I was 6 or 8 years old, he led teen groups, " she said.
Mr. Jones was normally quiet and reserved around other people, but with family, "it was a whole different story -- he was silly and fun, " said his wife.
One of his favorite things was dressing up as Santa Claus at Christmas.
Mr. Jones liked playing sports, particularly baseball, and taught his children to love the game as well. "I grew up on a ballfield, " said DeMoisey. She said her father's motto was, "if you didn't give 110 percent and come off the field dirty, it wasn't worth playing."
Mr. Jones was offered a spot on the Reds farm team right out of high school, but was drafted instead, serving six years in the Marine Corps, including two in Vietnam. There he assisted his battalion as a chaplain.
"He had very strong morals and values and expected nothing less out of his children, " Mrs. Jones said.
Her husband didn't just talk about his values, though -- he showed them in his life, his wife said. "He lived the example."
After he retired as police chief in 1990, he was director of corporate security for the Forest Fair Mall in Fairfield, Ohio, until 2000. He was employed by MVM Security in the Internal Revenue Service center in Covington at the time of his death.
He was a graduate of the FBI Academy and a member of the Northern Kentucky Police Chiefs Association.
