Nellie E. Beach, 97, loved family, church
Nellie Elizabeth Beach was a tough lady who lived on her own until the last few months of her long, long life, said her son, Ronald Beach.
With seven children, 28 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, she had to be able to withstand a lot.
"She had a lot of grit, " said Ronald Beach, of Crittenden.
Mrs. Beach, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at Grant Manor Nursing Home in Williamstown. She was 97.
She was a homemaker, a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and a Sunday school and Bible school teacher at the church. Beach said his mother was particularly supportive of missionary work.
"She was a good Christian person, she loved the Lord. She was always interested in missions and inspired us to be as well, " he said.
Her family took top priority in her life.
"Family was really important to her, " Beach said. "She was always concerned about others."
Late in her life, Mrs. Beach became somewhat of an environmentalist, her son said, and would read news stories about taking care of the earth.
"Once she had me take a truck full of glass to recycle up to Cincinnati, " he said.
Beach said his mother also took care of his ailing father for nearly 15 years before he died.
"I'll always be indebted to her for that, for taking care of him like that, " he said.
Her husband, Ronald C. Beach, died in 1984. A daughter, Norma Smith, died in 1991.
Other survivors include another son, David Beach of Dry Ridge; daughters, Garnett Jones of Georgetown, Lois Carnes and Ruth Glass, both of Mount Zion, Eileen Mullins of Beauty and Claudia O'Neil of Lexington; and a sister, Mable Ferrell of Latonia.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Vine Run Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Jack Asher, 79, of Sparta, died Wednesday at his home. He was a farmer, a member of Craigs Creek Holiness Church in Sparta and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Washburn Asher of Sparta; daughters, Janet Morgan of Sparta, Doris French, Diane Hughes and Bonnie Roberts, all of Warsaw, Joyce Roberie of Owenton and Connie Rouse of Verona; sons, Roger Asher of Erlanger, Ricky Asher of Hyden, Ralph Asher of Sparta, Robert Asher of Harker Heights, Texas, and Rowland Asher of Warsaw; brothers, Pearl Asher of Hyden, Bobby Asher and Jimmy Asher, both of Corinth; sisters, Rosie Collett of Williamsburg, Betty Nantz of Fort Meyers, Fla., Bonnie Haskins of Carrollton, Alice Beers of Warsaw and Daisy James of Elliston; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Ulysses Creek Pentecostal Church, Big Creek. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in the Asher Family Cemetery, Big Creek.
Sophia Bolling, of Covington, died Wednesday at her home.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Robert William Burke, 92, of Latonia, died at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. He was a retired custodian with Covington Public Schools and a member of Southside Baptist Church, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Daniel Burke; a son, Louis Robert Burke of Latonia; a daughter, Juanita Jean Quinn of Latonia; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Frank Butler, 93, of Kenton County, died Tuesday at Mercy Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired, self-employed welder.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Butler; daughters, Leila Clontz of Wilmington, Ill., Ethel Lowry of Olther, Kan., Alma McCarty of Datil, N.M., and Faith Radtke of St. Louis; a son, Stephen Butler of Texas; a sister, Dora Butler of Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Crandon, Wis. Suminski Funeral Home, Crandon, is handling arrangements. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling local arrangements.
Robert "Jumbo" Cooper, 75, of Dover, died at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville. He was a farmer. His wife, Evelyn Cooper, died in 1994.
Survivors include daughters, Kathy Buerkley and Pecola Polley, both of Maysville, and Sue Cooper and Judy Klicker, both of Dover; sons, Chester Cooper and Donnie Cooper, both of Dover, and Jerry Cooper of Maysville; a brother, Gene Cooper of Dayton, Ohio; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Dover.
Ronny Hager, 52, of Florence, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a welder with Natico Inc. and a member of United Paperworkers International Union Local No. 1255, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a his parents, O'Dell and Aline Howard Hager of Florence; a sister, Diane Daniels of Independence; and brothers, Jerry Hager of Erlanger, Danny Hager of Crittenden, and Roger Hager and Steve Hager, both of Florence.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Life Center Memorial Fund, in care of Sandy Chapman, 234 Goodman Ave., Apt. 726A, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.
Carole Rae McKenzie, 69, of Crescent Springs, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired job placement worker with the Kentucky Employment Department. Her husband, Alfred M. McKenzie, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Curtis McKenzie of Crescent Springs and Gary McKenzie of Villa Hills; his stepmother, Ethel Brown of Georgetown, Ohio; a brother, Frank Pribble of Cincinnati; sisters, Connie Terry of Ludlow, Cathy Dick of Cincinnati and Elaine Story of Davidson, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Mrs. McKenzie bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Scleroderma Foundation, 12 Kent Way, Byfield, Mass. 01922.
Horace Pate, 78, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Monday at Clovernook Pavilion, Cincinnati. He was an employee of the City of Newport. His wife, Annie Pate, and a son, Horace Pate Jr., both preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Denise Pate Ethelyn Gover, Tina Pate and Lucy Pate, all of Cincinnati; a son, Mark Pate of Cincinnati; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Jones, Simpson & Gee Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Adelaide E. Rankin, 89, of Newport, died Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired secretary with W.C. Tharpe & Son, Dayton, and Radel Funeral Home, Newport. She was a former member of Central Christian Church in Newport and a past president of the York Street School PTA. Her husband, James S. Rankin, died in 1957.
Survivors include daughters, Marylou Simons of Germantown and Debbie Noble of Latonia; a son, Jim Ranklin of Crescent Springs; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Mary Anna Belle Rector, 85, of Newport, died Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

Ruth M. Robinson, 76, of California, died at 12:50 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Joseph Robinson, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Marcus Cummins and Gary Robinson, both of California; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Tuesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Cemetery, Carthage. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Joyce C. Wood, 58, of Union, died Tuesday at her home. She was a certified medical assistant with Northern Kentucky Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.
Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Grable of Zanesfield, Ohio; sons, Frank Wood of Alexandria and Lloyd Gerhardt of Union; brothers, Dale Jones of Elsmere and John Jones of Alexandria; and four grandchildren.
