David Charles Juengling, 62, stay-at-home father
David Charles Juengling became a father for the first time when he was 59.
The overjoyed dad soon retired from his job to become a stay-at-home dad. For the next three years, he stayed at his Fort Thomas home with his daughter, Elizabeth Blair Juengling, until his death Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 62.
"She was his life for these last three years, " said Mr. Juengling's widow, Barbara Steltenpohl Petrey Juengling.
Mr. Juengling met his bride-to-be in the early 1980s, when she worked for him at the Mill End Shop, a custom drapery and upholstery store in downtown Cincinnati.
They married
in 1987, tried to have children for a few years and then concluded they couldn't. Then Mrs. Juengling became pregnant with Elizabeth, and gave birth to her in 1999.
"We laughingly referred to her as our miracle baby, " Mrs. Juengling said. "The good Lord put her in our lives now more than ever. I believe there was a reason for that. His last years with her have been uniquely blessed."
Mr. Juengling retired from the shop, where he had worked for more than 25 years, in January 2000, and his wife went back to work for the Kenton County Schools, where she is the director of assessment and accountability.
A big fan of the arts, Mr. Juengling often took his daughter to art shows and openings in downtown Cincinnati. He also patronized local artists, and filled his home with their paintings.
"He so much appreciated beauty in any form. He enjoyed nature as well, " his widow said. "He taught me early in our relationship that you can just sit outside and take it all in. You didn't have to be doing something, just be part of what's there."
